Eagles Return Former MVP's Nelson and Ulanski
October 2, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Colorado Eagles News Release
WINDSOR, Colo. - The Colorado Eagles announced Wednesday that veteran forwards Riley Nelson and Kevin Ulanski will re-join the Eagles' lineup for the 2013-14 season.
"Riley and Kevin are not only two former league MVP's who bring with them a tremendous skill set, they are truly the heart and soul of this team," said Eagles president and general manager Chris Stewart. "Their leadership, their contributions to this community and their presence in the room is absolutely invaluable."
Nelson, the team's captain and all-time leading scorer (758 points in 590 games), is the only player remaining from the club's inaugural season in 2003. Among his many accolades, Nelson also ranks first in Eagles history in goals, assists and plus/minus rating (+254). A two-time champion and league MVP in the CHL, Nelson registered 60 points (25-35-60) in 66 games in the 2011-12 season, the Eagles first season in the ECHL, to rank as the team's third-highest scoring forward. Last season saw the Cranbrook, British Columbia native's season cut short due to injury, posting 14 points in just 26 games of action.
A member of the University of Denver's back-to-back NCAA championship teams in 2004 & 2005, Ulanski has played for the Eagles in each of the past five seasons, being voted the CHL's MVP in 2009-10 - a season in which he also led the league in points (109). Ulanski ranks fourth on the team's all-time scoring list with 407 points (138-269-407) in 308 games, just nine points shy of Ryan Tobler in third. The 109 points he registered in the 2009-10 season are a club record for most points in a campaign. He also boasts a plus/minus rating of +120 (sixth all-time), to go along with 29 game-winning goals (fourth all-time) and his 269 assists are second in Eagles history.
Last season, Ulanski came out of retirement to join the Eagles in November. He would go on to register 51 points in 59 games, which was good for fourth on the team in scoring. Additionally, he would post three goals and five points in the Eagles six post-season contests.
