SYDNEY - The Cape Breton Eagles rallied but couldn't pull ahead in a 4-2 loss to the Charlottetown Islanders.

It was both a long wait and wait to begin the game. Originally scheduled for 7:00 PM, the game began at 7:35 due to a delay in medical staff arriving at the rink. But once the staff did arrive, it was just 13 seconds into the game when Lukas Cormier scored from the left side of the blueline to give Charlottetown the lead.

Charlottetown heavily carried the early part of the game, and that even extended to the penalty kill as Drew Elliot deked around Sean Larcohelle and put it through the legs of Nicolas Ruccia. As the period came to an end, the Islanders had a chance to stretch the lead further with their own power play.

However, there was another short handed goal to be found in the opening period. With just eight seconds left, Logan Camp came up the ice on a breakway and ripped it off the post and over the goal line to give the Eagles a short handed marker.

In the second period, it was the Eagles earning the early marker. Jérémy Langlois feathered a pass from the left faceoff circle that Peter Repcik was able to tip by Oliver Satny before the two minute mark. There was no further scoring in the second period (in part due to a big short handed save by Nicolas Ruccia on Kieran Gallant.)

After all the short handed opportunities, the power play finally came through in the third period and unfortunately for the Eagles it was for the visitors. Noah Laaouan put a heavy shot low along on the ice past Ruccia and gave Charlottetown the lead. Charlottetown had a chance to pull ahead by two when a Brett Budgell shot rung off the crossbar.

With 2:29 to play, Ruccia was pulled in favour of an extra attacker. The Eagles had their chances, including a Kian Bell shot that went over the net, but couldn't find a tying goal. Charlottetown was able to clear the zone, and hit the empty net when Jakub Brabenec passed to Patrick Guay from behind the net.

Satny picked up the win, stopping 22 of 24. Ruccia took the loss, turning aside 29 of 32 in addition to the empty netter.

The Eagles now begin a three game road trip, starting Thursday night in Moncton against the Wildcats. Puck drop on Friday is at 7 PM.
