Cape Breton Eagles News Release
GATINEAU - The Cape Breton Eagles came from behind for an overtime win Wednesday night to push a winning streak to three games. Jérémy Langlois was the overtime hero in a 3-2 victory in Gatineau, in the Eagles first ever visit to the new Slush Puppie Centre.
While the Eagles had chances in the opening period, the first frame belonged to the home side. Cole Cormier scored in traffic before the game five minutes old, and in the final four minutes Olivier Boutin put a shot through a screen to put Gatineau up 2-0. The Olympiques outshot the Eagles 20-9.
But the only goal in the second stanza belonged to the Eagles. Émile Hegarty-Aubin, playing in his first game as a visiting player in Gatineau after being traded in June of 2020, put the visitors on the board- roofing a breakaway pass over Rémi Poirier. Cape Breton had a prime opportunity to pull even in the second half of the period, but Gatineau was able to kill off a high sticking double minor to Zach Dean.
There weren't many quality scoring chances in the opening part of the third period as Gatineau closely guarded their lead. But the Eagles power play would find a way to generate a tying goal. Ivan Ivan held the puck in the left faceoff circle, slipped it down to Cam Squires at the side of the net, who found Nicholas Girouard to put it through the legs of Poirier.
After tightly contested second and third periods, a brief overtime produced multiple scoring chances. But it the end it was Lanlgois following the play to the net, putting a shot from the left wing past Poirier to give the Eagles the win in the extra session.
Nicolas Ruccia picked up the win, stopping 34 of 27 shots in the win. Poirier turned aside 25 of 28 in the loss.
