Colorado Eagles News Release
After a three-game skid, the Colorado Eagles led by Greg Pankewicz dominated the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees 7-1 tonight in front of sold out house (5,289) at the Budweiser Events Center. The Eagles scored seven goals from seven different goal scorers for their best performance to date. Greg Pankewicz was in the lineup for the first time since opening night in Oklahoma City where he notched three points in two and a half periods. He out did himself tonight with a breakaway goal and three assists as the Eagles scored the final five goals of the contest. Eagles goaltender Tyler Weiman saved 27 shots for his third victory of the season.
The Eagles started the first period on a good tilt testing Levy from the opening face off, but the Bees fought back getting a few scoring chances of their own in the period. Goaltender Tyler Weiman saved 11 shots in the first frame while his counterpart Jeff Levy saved all 14 shots he faced. The scoreless first period was only the second scoreless opening frame thus far in the Eagles season.
Mike Lephart took a penalty for hooking six minutes in to the second period. Defenseman Brad Williamson ended the scoreless tie on a power play goal at the 9:00 mark when he picked up a rebound and snuck it passed Jeff Levy for the first of seven Eagles goals. Mike Lephart assisted on the play. Matt Desrosiers took an interference penalty 1:36 later, but it was the Eagles that took advantage of the penalty when Greg Pankewicz took a pass from Riley Nelson for a breakaway goal. It was the Eagles first short-handed goal of the season. The Bees fought back when Bill Newson cut the lead in half on a great individual effort streaking down the far boards and lifted the puck over Weiman's shoulder. Jason Tessier and Derek Holland assisted on the play for the Bees. Just after the Bees goal, there was a glass problem in the corner of the ice causing the intermission to come 2:22 early. The final 2:22 was played after the intermission and Eagles leading point scorer Kevin Marsh tallied another goal before the period ended on a beautiful give-and-go effort with Riley Nelson. The second officially ended with Colorado leading 3-1.
In the third period, the Eagles poured on the goals. Jesse Cook unloaded a bomb on a great pass from Karlis Zirnis across the slot only 4:29 into the period four the first of four goals in the third. Sean Robertson got into the action a little more than half way through the period on a redirection from a shot by Matt Desrosiers. Once the Eagles took a 5-1 lead, the "Subway" chants started from the crowd, and the Eagles did not disappoint. Kevin McDonald picked up a loose puck in front of the net and jammed it home to give Eagles fans a free Subway sandwich. Any time throughout the season, if the Eagles score six goals, fans are rewarded with a free six-inch Subway sandwich courtesy of the "Subway Six-Goal Shootout" promotion. The Eagles were not finished though, Riley Nelson got into the action and ripped a slap shot stick-side and beat Levy for the Eagles final goal and a six goal victory.
The Eagles and Bees face off again tomorrow night at the Budweiser Events Center at 7:05 pm. The game is the second of three meetings between the teams this season. Colorado will travel to Rio Grande Valley on January 14 to cap off the regular season series.
