Eagles Overcome Four-Goal Deficit, Beat Scorpions 7-6

LOVELAND, CO- The Colorado Eagles beat the New Mexico Scorpions 7-6 Friday night and broke many records in the process. The Eagles came back from a 4-0 deficit in the first period breaking the record for largest deficit overcome, Greg Pankewicz had his third hat trick of the season in just his seventh game and the Eagles scored a record six goals in the second period. Colorado has now come back in five of their six wins and the team has taken over first place in the Northwest Division. Lance Herauf was in the scoring on all six goals for the Scorpions setting the league-lead for most points in a game with his two goals and four assists. Eagles goaltender Tim Boron came in half way through the game and won his first professional game saving 10 of 11 shots. Pankewicz now leads the Central Hockey League with 13 goals and 20 points. The Eagles bumped their all-time record to 11-0-3 over the New Mexico Scorpions at the Budweiser Events Center and they are 6-1-0 on the season.

New Mexico scored the first of their four unanswered first period goals less than one minute into the period on a goal by Rob Guinn. Lance Herauf put the Scorpions up 2-0 at the 3:25 mark of the period on assists from Ryan McLeod and Victor Uchevatov. The Scoripions took a 3-0 lead on another Rob Guinn goal at the 12:14 of the first and the Scorpions final goal of the period came on the power play on a goal by Mike Falk. After 17 minutes of play, the Eagles found themselves down 4-0, but began their comeback on a power play goal by Scott Polaski with 40 seconds remaining in the period to cut the score to 4-1 before the intermission.

Only moments into the second period, New Mexico's Konrad Reeder had an open net behind the goalie, but had the puck bounce away from him and it was the turning point in the game. Greg Pankewicz skated in on a breakaway and beat goaltender Walter Bartholomaeus for his first goal of the game and third shorthanded goal of the season. New Mexico quickly answered on Lance Herauf's second goal of the game and fifth point to make the score 5-2 4:27 into the second period. Eagles goaltender Marco Emond was consequently pulled from the game for Tim Boron who did not face a shot on goal for the remainder of the period. Colorado controlled the final 15 minutes starting with a goal by Chris Hartsburg on an assist from Pankewicz. Garrett Larson made the score 5-4 on his second goal in as many games when he tipped an Aaron Schneekloth pass into the back of the net. The Eagles continued to pressure and tied the game on another goal by Pankewicz, a power play goal at the 13:22 mark of the period. Craig Strain gave the Eagles their first lead on his second goal of the season at the 14:38 mark. Finally, Colorado and Greg Pankewicz scored their seventh goal of the game with 42 seconds remaining in the period on another power play goal, and the Eagles fans threw their hats on the ice for the third time this season after a Pankewicz hat trick. After two periods of play, the Eagles held a 7-5 lead and had broken their all-time record with six goals in the period.

The third period was an uneventful period, although the Scorpions made the game close after pulling their goaltender and scoring with 9 seconds remaining. Lance Herauf assisted on Mike Falk's goal for his sixth point of the contest. The Eagles out shot the Scorpions 34-30 in the contest and head to New Mexico for a game tomorrow night at the brand new Santa Ana Star Center.
