Eagles Open Home Stand with Victory over Wildcats

SYDNEY- The Cape Breton Screaming Eagles opened a three game home stand in the win column with a 4-2 victory over the Moncton Wildcats.

The home team struck first, 3:46 into the opening period. Declan Smith fired a backhand pass off the left side of the boards to Peyton Hoyt in front of the net and Hoyt would tip it by Mark Grametbauer to make it a 1-0 game.

Before the period Ty Fournier would pad the lead. Fournier set up behind the net, passed the puck to Adam McCormick in front of the goal who wired it off the glass. The puck bounced to the side of the goal and Fournier was on the doorstep to jam it in.

Moncton would be given a big opportunity to get back into the game towards the end of the first period. Adam McCormick and Noah Laaouan were both sent off in the same sequence and the Wildcats would have a full 5 on 3 that would carry over into the middle period.

Kyle Jessiman was extremely sharp to conclude the opening stanza, making three big saves in the final ten seconds. When the power play continued into period two, the Eagles were able to mainly limit the chances for the Wildcats. However after the power play was over Moncton would keep the pressure on, and almost had their first goal of the night but a would be Jakob Pelletier score was waived off because the puck was kicked in. There would be power play goals in the period, though, the first going the way of the home side. It took just four seconds into a penalty to Nicholas Welsh for the Eagles to push the lead 3-0. Mathias Laferri?re would receive a pass at the circle opposite of the faceoff and hammer a shot over Mark Grametbauer to add to the home side's lead.

The Wildcats would actually earn a second brief 5 on 3 in the middle of the period. The visitors wouldn't score on the two man advantage but before the second penalty ended Jack Tucker would rip a low shot past Kyle Jessiman to break the shutout.

Cape Breton would restore the three goal lead before period's end, thanks to Isiah Campbell. The big forward would follow his own rebound and cash in, digging the puck out from under Grametbauer and make it a 4-1 game.

There would be some fireworks in the third period as Cape Breton's Peyton Hoyt and Moncton's Dylan Seitz dropped the gloves. Seitz was given a game misconduct for attempting to pull off Hoyt's helmet.

James Phelan would pull the Cats a goal closer with a short handed marker at the 12:05 mark. The overage forward was camped out at the side of the goal and jammed it under Jessiman to cut the lead to 4-2.

With a two goal deficit, Wildcats coach Darren Rumble elected to lift his netminder with over four minutes to go. Moncton would get some opportunities but were not able to solve Jessiman.

In the final minute, the Eagles netminder took the opportunity to the lift the puck, fire it 200 feet but it would go wide as the goaltender was denied in his attempt to score a goal. While the Eagles were unable to hit the open net, the Wildcats couldn't get any closer and Cape Breton had a 4-2 victory.

Jessiman stopped 28 of 30 shots in the victory while Grametbauer allowed 17 of 21 shots in the loss.

This Friday the Screaming Eagles continue their home stand on when they host the Charlottetown Islanders in the third annual Bullying Awareness night at Centre 200. Students from over 15 local schools have been invited to attend.
