Cape Breton Eagles News Release
NOTES FROM THE GAME - Eagles rookie import forward Lubos Stahon scored his first career goal at the 17:52 mark of the third period to break a 3-3 tie and give the Eagles a 4-3 win over Saint John.
- Stahon also assisted on Antoine Roy's tying goal in the third period. Cole Burbidge & William Shields also scored for the Eagles.
- Egan Beveridge scored the only goal of the opening period, in a game which neither team ever held a two goal lead.
- Nicolas Ruccia stopped 28 of 31 shots in the win, while Patrick Leaver allowed four goals on 18 shots. Eriks Mateiko & Peter Reynolds also scored for Saint John.
After Beveridge built the lead in the first period lead, the Sea Dogs carried the play in the early part of the second but the Eagles weathered the storm and took their own lead- Shields tying it on a breakaway pass from Burbidge, who converted on a power play to give the Eagles lead, scoring on a rebound after Cam MacDonald hit the post.
Saint John scored their own pair of goals before period's end to retake the lead- a nifty individual effort by Mateiko powering up the left side of the ice to tie it, and Reynolds with a rising shot that tricked Ruccia to give Saint John the lead.
The Sea Dogs still led in the final five minutes before a Stahon shot was blocked by Leaver- Roy buzzed the front of the net, collected a rebound to shove it over the goal line. The Stahon goal came just 184 seconds later, the first of the Slovakian's career, giving the Eagles a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Saint John coach Travis Crickard pulled his goaltender in the minute but was unable to produce a tying goal.
