SHAWINIGAN - The Cape Breton Eagles concluded their three game road trip to Shawinigan with a 5-2 loss against the Cataractes on Saturday afternoon.

A strong first period helped carry the home side to victory. Just 1:28 into the game, Anthony DiCesare scored on a rebound from the right side of the net. The Eagles showed early pushback, with Connor Trenholm equalizing the score before the six minute park. But Loic Gibeault capitalized on the power play on a diagonal feed from the blueline and tapped it in from the side of the goal. Before period's end, a rebound came out to Alexis Bonefon in the left face-off circle and he pushed the home team's lead to 3-1.

The scoring summary was much more quiet in the middle period, and it was the visitors that found the only goal when Ivan Ivan put the puck through the legs of Charles-Antoine Lavallée. The Eagles killed off back to back penalties in the later part of the period, and that would foreshadow a third period nearly filled with special teams. (The Eagles actually finished the second period on the power play, and then were unable to score on a brief 5 on 3 to start the third period.)

During one of the five on five sequences in the final frame, Trenholm believed he may have have tied the game when he rung the puck off the crossbar. The referee called no goal, play continued and Kian Bell was sent off for tripping to end the sequence. The no goal call was upheld after a review, and Shawinigan was given an extended 5 on 3 when Jacob Squires was sent off just 21 seconds later.

The Eagles were able to kill the first minute off the two man advantage but couldn't hold off Shawinigan captain William Veillette who restored the two goal margin. While the Eagles did kill off the second minor, Natan Éthier scored his first career goal as well from the hashmarks in the final six minutes to make it a 5-2 final.

Charles-Antoine Lavallée stopped 21 of 23 shots in the win, while Nicolas Ruccia allowed five goals on 28 shots in the loss.

The Eagles are next in action on Friday night when they host the Halifax Mooseheads, for CBU Night at the Nest! The game will feature the return of critically acclaimed professional superfan Cameron Hughes to Centre 200, and the Eagles will wear custom orange & green CBU themed uniforms for the game.
