Cape Breton Eagles News Release
SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs struck first and earned a split in a weekend double header with a 5-3 win over the Cape Breton Eagles. The Eagles won the first half of the weekend set 5-4 in overtime on Friday.
It was Nicholas Girouard who opened the scoring for the home side, tipping a point shot from Charlie DesRoches by netminder Nicolas Ruccia. Saint John had a chance to expand the lead not long after when Jérémy Langlois was sent off for interference.
But just nine seconds into the penalty, some good work from Félix Lafrance drew a Saint John penalty. With the teams playing 4 on 4, Nathan Larose spun around to evade Dawson Stairs and blasted a shot through Noah Patenaude to tie the game.
Saint John would reclaim the league prior to period's end. Joshua Roy restored the lead on a tap in at the side of the net off a Kale McCallum pass from the blueline. Before the first horn, Girouard converted a pass from behind the net from Brady Burns and it was 3-1 at the break.
Félix Lafrance would once again be productive on the penalty kill- a breakaway goal short handed in the opening minute of the middle period. The teams would swap goals before period's end- first Peter Reynolds stabbing away at a loose puck in front of the net to make it 4-2. Before period's end, an Eagles power play goal would cut the lead to 4-3- Shawn Element scoring on a one timer just six seconds into the man advantage.
The 4-3 score wouldn't hold long into the third period- just 31 seconds into the final frame Riley Bezeau caught Nicolas Ruccia playing the puck behind the net and put the puck in from a sharp angle to push the Saint John lead to 5-3. In the last few minutes, Eagles coach Jake Grimes elected to lift Ruccia for an extra attacker but the Eagles were unable to find a goal and the game finished 5-3.
The Eagles are next in action on Friday night on home ice against the Acadie-Bathurst Titan. Game time is 7 PM. There is now limited availability to purchase tickets for Eagles home games- full details can be found at https://bit.ly/3jmSmML
