Cape Breton Eagles News Release
SYDNEY - The Charlottetown Islanders struck first in the QMJHL's island rivalry with a 5-2 win on Friday night in Sydney.
Charlottetown carried the play in the opening period and received their reward, finally solving William Grimard in the final five minutes as Brendan McCarthy scored his first career goal on an angle from the side of the net. The Islanders outshot the Eagles 16-3 in the opening frame and carried a 1-0 lead to break.
The visitors dominated the early part of the second period as well, forcing the Eagles to burn a timeout before the halfway mark. It had the desired effect as the Eagles won the ensuing defensive face-off, produced a scoring chance, and not long after tied the game. Jarrett Baker won the puck with some good work along the boards and sent the puck cross-ice to Liam Kidney who tied the game. Grimard stood tall for the balance of the period and it was even at 1 heading into the third period.
It was the early stage of the third period that was the difference in the game. Charlottetown rookie forward Ben Boyd converted a pass from behind the net just 16 seconds into the final frame and the Islanders were off and running. Less than six minutes later, it was 4-1 after Drew Johnston and Justin Gill found ways to beat the Eagles netminder.
A power play opportunity would give the Eagles a chance to claw back in the game and they didn't take long capitalizing. Just 12 seconds into the man advantage Nathan Larose ripped a shot that would be tipped by Félix Lafrance and the Eagles were within two goals before the seven minute mark.
The Eagles could get no closer on the scoreboard before night's end. Charlottetown added to the lead thanks to good work in the corner by Thomas Casey. Outmanned in the corner of the Eagles zone, Casey awaited help and send the puck to Cédric Desruisseaux streaking into the zone who put it by Grimard for the game's final red light.
Colten Ellis stopped 13 of 15 shots in the win, while Grimard turned aside 37 of 42 shots in the loss.
