Charlottetown Islanders News Release
The second weekend of the QMJHL regular season sees your Charlottetown Islanders head back on the road for a pair of back-to-back games against the Cape Breton Eagles at Centre 200 in Sydney beginning tonight at 7:00pm.
The Islanders got off to a hot start to the season, winning both opening weekend games including a 6-5 thriller over the Saint John Sea Dogs. Cedric Desruisseaux led the way on the scoresheet with his second career QMJHL hat trick along with an assist, while Lukas Cormier posted a goal and three assists of his own. The Islanders defender leads all QMJHL players after one weekend with six points in two games.
The excitement continued for Cormier after he was selected by the Vegas Golden Knights in the third round, 68th overall, at the 2020 NHL Draft. He's expected to join his teammates in the lineup following a few days spent with friends and family back in St-Marie-de-Kent, New Brunswick.
Meanwhile, the Eagles split their home-at-home opening series with the Halifax Mooseheads last weekend, dropping their home opener 6-2 on Friday night before returning the favour with a 5-4 overtime victory Saturday night in Halifax. Veterans Nathan Larose and Shaun Element carried the load in the win; Larose potted two goals and an assist from the point, while Element recorded a game-high four assists in the victory.
Cape Breton had some NHL Draft success of their own this past week; forward Ryan Francis was selected in the fifth round, 143rd overall, by the Calgary Flames on Wednesday. Francis had a breakout season last year, recording 48 assists and 72 points in 61 games. He's recorded a point in each of Cape Breton's first two games this season. Former Eagle Egor Sokolov also finally heard his name called, being selected in the second round, 61st overall, by the Ottawa Senators.
The season series last season was a near split between the two teams; Charlottetown finished the year with a 3-3-1-0 against Cape Breton, while the Eagles finished 4-2-1-0. The last time these two teams met was on February 28th; Matthew Welsh set the QMJHL record for most minutes played by a goaltender as the Islanders defeated the Eagles 6-2 on Player's Night in Charlottetown.
All of the play in this weekend's back-to-back series can be heard live on Fair Isle Ford Isles Radio! Tonight's game can be heard on our official YouTube page. Saturday night's action can be heard live on Ocean 100 with George Matthews and Cory Arsenault!
