Eagles Fall 7-3 to Titan on Heritage Night at the Nest

Cape Breton Eagles News Release

SYDNEY - The Cape Breton Eagles couldn't dig out of a deep second period deficit and were defeated 7-3 by the Acadie-Bathurst Titan on Friday night in Sydney.

The first period showed no signs of a high scoring game- it was just 1-0 after the opening stanza. The visitors struck visitors as Dylan Andrews tipped a Félix Lafrance shot by Rémi Delafontaine on the power play. The Eagles had a 99 second 5 on 3 late in the period but were unable to capitalize.

The opening of the second period would be the difference in the game. Almost immediately off the opening faceoff, Jacob Melanson charged into the Eagles zone and beat Delafontaine with a wrist shot. Before the period was two minutes old, Ben Allison finished a cross-crease passing play and it was 3-0 Titan.

The Eagles were able to settle the game down a bit, and killed the first three minutes of a double minor to Jacob Squires before the halfway mark of regulation. However the Titan power play wouldn't stay silent as Thomas Belgarde found the back of the net.

But the Eagles would use their own power play magic to get back on to the game, on the back of the team's second unit. First it was Émile Hegarty-Aubin jabbing it over the goal line to get the Eagles on the board, and then a Kian Bell shot redirected by Chad Arsenault.

Then less than a minute later Logan Camp put a shot through a screen and pulled the Eagles within a goal. Before period's end, Bennett MacArthur restored a two goal cushion by keeping and shooting on a 2 on 1 and it was a 5-3 game going into the intermission.

The Eagles had chances in the third period, including Cam Squires ripping a shot off the iron- the first of four bars the two teams would combine to hit in the final 20 mintues. However, Andrews found a way to hit the back of net twice more. First, he was left alone at the side of the goal and spun around to put the puck over Delafontaine. Then with just 68 seconds left he completed the hat trick and the scoring for the night as the score finished 7-3.

For the game the Eagles wore specially designed jerseys designed by Membertou First Nations to replicate Chief Terry Paul's Regalia. The jerseys are now being auctioned off, with the proceeds going to a charity of Membertou's choice. Bidding is open at
