Cape Breton Eagles News Release
DARTMOUTH - The Cape Breton Eagles were on the wrong end of a 7-2 score in their first away game of the 2020 exhibition schedule- the backend of of a home and home with the Halifax Mooseheads.
On Wednesday night, it took more than halfway through regulation to find the game's first goal. But Thursday saw both teams score in the opening 69 seconds. Each team scored on their first shot- Zachary L'Heureux opening the scoring for the home side before Adam Bowness tipped a shot by Halifax netminder Cole McLaren.
Halifax would handle the rest of the scoring in the opening frame- Olivier Tourchot scoring on an angle to give the Mooseheads the lead and Mason Mantzavrakos putting it in the top corner over Nicolas Ruccia to add to the lead.
Ruccia and McLaren would allow no further goals and were each replaced after the halfway mark of the game. Ruccia turned aside 23 of 26 shots while McLaren stopped 12 of 13.
Both new goaltenders would be given a rude welcome before the period's end, however. New Eagles netminder Kenzie MacPhail got a piece of a Jordan Dumais shot but not enough to stop it from going over the goal line. Cape Breton's counter came short handed with 75 seconds left in the period- Alexis Bolduc converted a nice feed from Jacob Santerre to welcome Brady Jones to the contest.
Before the halfway mark of the third period, Halifax added a pair of goals to their lead 39 seconds apart. Brendan Tomilson fired a shot through traffic past MacPhail to make it 5-2, and William Robitaille padded the margin with a rush off the left wing. Alexandre Tessier finished the scoring in the final minute and the home side prevailed 7-2.
MacPhail allowed four goals on 15 shots while Jones stopped seven of eight in 27:03 of playing time.
The Eagles are back in action on Saturday evening as they host the Moncton Wildcats at 5 PM at Centre 200. The game will be streamed live at https://bit.ly/31TGjky
