Eagles Fall 6-1 in Return to Play in Halifax
March 2, 2022 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Cape Breton Eagles News Release
HALIFAX - A short-staffed Cape Breton Eagles club started strong but were not enough for the Halifax Mooseheads in a 6-1 loss in the capital city on Tuesday night. It was the first game for the Eagles since February 19th in Val-d'Or as the team was missing five players due to Covid-19 protocol.
The Eagles outshot the Mooseheads 10-7 in the opening period but the home team did strike first thanks to captain Elliot Desnoyers. However, before period's end, Peter Repcik converted a feed from Lucas Canning to tie the teams at one at the first siren.
A three goal second period proved to set Halifax on course to victory. It started with a heavy shot just under the crossbar from Bobby Orr at the four minute mark. Then, two goals 59 seconds apart past the halfway mark of the middle stanza.
Jordan Dumais played the bounce off the boards and stuffed it short side to score on the first Mooseheads power play of the net. Then Zack Jones pushed the lead to 4-1 when he was in the blue paint, converting a feed from behind the net by Orr. Halifax played a more defensive structure in third, sitting on the lead but then tacking on to two goals in the latter half of the frame as Orr and Desnoyers both found the net back for the second time on the evening.
Mathis Rousseau picked up the win, stopping 25 of 26 shots. Rémi Delafontaine took the loss, allowing six goals on 29 shots.
The Eagles recalled four players ahead of Tuesday's game: defensemen Matheas Elles & Preston Pattengale, forward Luke Patterson, and backup netminder Lucas Fraser. Elles was the last scratch prior to game time, but did participate in the customary rookie lap to begin warmup.
The Eagles will now head home for their first home game of the year 2022, Thursday night against the Moncton Wildcats! Season ticket holders are advised to use their March 6th ticket for this game.
