Cape Breton Eagles News Release

MONCTON - A third period rally for the Cape Breton Eagles came up short on Sunday afternoon in Moncton with a 5-2 loss to the Wildcats.

After the Eagles topped the Wildcats 2-1 in a shootout on Thursday, a low scoring game could have been expected again- and it was just 1-0 Moncton at the halfway point of regulation on a first period goal by Alexis Daniel.

The temperature of the game escalated with just over seven minutes remaining in the third period. After Peter Repcik hit Moncton's Yoan Loshing into the boards, Loshing appeared to clip Repcik with a high stick. Play continued, and Loshing moved the puck to Brooklyn Kalmikov in the front of the net. Despite protests from the Eagles for a penalty, the former Cape Breton forward snapped it by Rémi Delafontaine to make it 2-0.

Not long after the goal, Eagles forward Jack Campbell took exception to a hit on Matt MacDonald, and charged at Alexis Daniel. Both were given fighting majors, but Campbell was given the instigator, and the Eagles given a bench minor as well. The Eagles killed off the first minor, but Loshing found the back of the net on the second minor before period's end to make it 3-0.

The Eagles earned their first full power play in the third period, and it was briefly a 5 on 3 with Jonas Taibel and Kalmikov both in the box. Cape Breton couldn't convert on the power play but broke through at even strength when Kian Bell cut through the defense and deked around Vincent Fillion. And then on the next power play, the Eagles would finish- Ivan Ivan just nine seconds in to the minor to cut the lead to 3-2.

Unfortunately for the visitors the reduced deficit would last less than three minutes. Manix Sarrasin, playing in his first QMJHL game for the Wildcats, found himself on the right side of the net and put the puck on Delafontaine. The Eagles keeper made multiple saves on the rookie forward, but persistence paid off for Sarrasin and his first QMJHL goal was a timely one for his team.

With more than four minutes remaining, Eagles coach Chadd Cassidy elected to pull Delafontaine in favour of an extra attacker. After Jonas Taibel missed the open goal, the Eagles were able to generate some chances, but couldn't get any closer. Kalmikov hit the open cage from centre ice and the Wildcats had a 5-2 victory.

Fillion turned aside 23 of 25 shots in the win, while Delafontaine stopped 25 of 29 in addition to the empty netter. With Jérémy Langlois a late scratch after warmup, affiliate Preston Pattengale played his sixth game of the season for the Eagles.

The Eagles will now head home for a four game homestand, beginning on Thursday night against the Chicoutimi Saguenéens. Puck drop is at 7 PM.
