The Saint John Sea Dogs (25-15-1-3) topped the Halifax Mooseheads (24-18-1-1) in a high scoring 10-2 win on Sunday afternoon. Seven different Sea Dogs hit the back of the net in the win at TD Station, including a hat trick from William Dufour, two goals from Cam MacDonald, and goals from Raivis Kristians Ansons, William Villeneuve, Philippe Daoust, Riley Bezeau, and Josh Lawrence. Three short handed goals for the home team tied the franchise record for most short handed goals in a game.
Thomas Couture started in net for the Sea Dogs making 38 saves on 40 shots. Mathis Rousseau started for the Mooseheads, allowing 5 goals on 19 shots before being replaced by Brady James who allowed 5 goals on 20 shots in the loss.
The Sea Dogs special teams took centre stage in the first period, where they scored three goals, two on the power play and one on the penalty kill. 29 seconds into the game, Halifax's James Swan was sent off on a tripping call and 40 seconds later Raivis Ansons tipped a pass from William Dufour past the netminder for the first goal of the afternoon.
Another Moosehead tripping call at 5:04 gave the power play their second opportunity, this time it was William Villeneuve that took advantage, sending a bomb of a shot through traffic and making it 2-0.
The Moosehead then scored their first of the night when a weird bounce sent the puck over Couture and into the net, bouncing off of his back.
The final goal of the period came from William Dufour, his 38th of the season, on the penalty kill. Coming into the offensive zone with Philippe Daoust with speed, Dufour flipped a quick shot top shelf and extended his goal streak to five games.
Shots after the first were 18-7 for Saint John.
An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty to Zachary L'Heureux after the final whistle in the first period gave the Sea Dogs a two minute power play to begin the second. Philippe Daoust scored his 10th goal of the season, sending a wrist shot into the back of the net on the power play.
William Dufour scored his second of the night two minutes into the period, with the Sea Dogs first even strength goal of the night. Halifax switched netminders after the goal and Brady James took over in net for the visitors.
A pair of penalties to Nathan Drapeau and Charlie DesRoches put the Sea Dogs on a 5-on-3 penalty kill for 57 seconds. Both penalties were killed successfully and Saint John maintained their 5-1 lead.
At 12:13, Cam MacDonald scored his eighth goal of the season, going five-hole to increase the Sea Dogs lead.
Shots after two periods were 28-24 for Saint John.
The final period began with a fight. Olivier Picard dropped the gloves with Zachary L'Heureux in the Sea Dogs zone at 1:15. Both players received a major and a misconduct.
A roughing call against Dufour brought the Sea Dogs penalty killing unit out at 3:37 and once again they were able to score short handed. Riley Bezeau hit the back of the net off a pass from Josh Lawrence.
William Dufour sent the hats flying with his third goal of the afternoon, his 40th of the season, flipping a shot in off his backhand at 10:14.
A cross-checking penalty to Riley Bezeau sent the penalty kill out and the Sea Dogs scored their third short handed goal of the night, tying a Sea Dogs franchise record. After notching four assists, Lawrence scored one of his own at 13:08 and made it a 9-1 game.
Cam MacDonald scored his second of the night at 16:41, making it a double digit game for the Sea Dogs.
The Mooseheads scored one last goal at 17:48 and the Sea Dogs won it with a final score of 10-2.
Final shots were 40-39 for Halifax.
