Eagles End Losing Skid with 5-2 Win over Youngstown

LOVELAND, Colo.- The Colorado Eagles ended their two-game losing skid Wednesday night with a 5-2 victory over the Youngstown SteelHounds at the Budweiser Events Center. The Eagles have never lost to the SteelHounds as they are now 6-0 in two seasons. The game was filled with penalties from start to finish and special teams was the difference as Colorado killed all 13 of Youngstown's power plays while they scored on one power play opportunity. Four different Eagles' players had multiple point games led by Brad Williamson's three assists and Ryan Tobler's two goals. Former Eagles player Garrett Larson played in his first game back at the BEC as an opposing player and scored both of the SteelHounds goals in the loss.

A total of 34 penalty minutes were called in the first period, 17 on each team. Colorado capitalized on one power play, a four-on-three man advantage at the 4:29 mark of the period when Riley Nelson blasted a slapshot past Brad Roberts from the top of the right circle. He was assisted by Eagles defensemen Aaron Schneekloth and Brad Williamson. Colorado finished the period 1-4 on the power play and killed all six of Youngstown's power plays including a four-minute double minor to Ryan Tobler. The Eagles out shot the SteeHounds 10-8 in the period and held on to the 1-0 lead.

Les Borsheim scored his third goal of the season on a centering pass from Scott Polaski at the 8:41 mark of the period to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead. The goal tied Borsheim's career high in goals (3) and in points (9). Youngstown battled back on a goal by former Eagles' player Garrett Larson at the 16:04 mark of the period to cut the lead to one goal going into the second intermission. After two periods, the Eagles were 1-7 on the power play while Youngstown was 0-11.

Eagles rookie Steve Haddon scored his second goal of the season when he got his stick on a rebound at the top of the slot, the puck went 15 feet in the air over goaltender Brad Roberts and into the back of the net. It turned out to be the game winning goal of the game. Ryan Tobler gave the Eagles a commanding 4-1 lead when the puck was centered by Scott Polaski and banged off of Tobler's skate into the net. Youngstown continued to fight and Garrett Larson scored his second goal of the game on a partial breakaway and he went to his backhand beating Eagles' goaltender Tim Boron. The SteelHounds pulled their goaltender and it was Ryan Tobler that capped the game with seven seconds remaining with an empty net goal, his second goal of the game. Youngstown finished the game with four more chances on the penalty kill although they were unable to convert on any of their 13 opportunities. They out shot Colorado 31-26 in the game, but other than former Eagles' player Garrett Larson, the SteelHounds were kept at bay. Final Score: Eagles 5 - SteelHounds 2.
