Sundogs Score Six Unanswered in Decisive 6-1 Win

PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - The Arizona Sundogs and Amarillo Gorillas would close out the month of January with a Southwest Division battle at the Tim's Toyota Center in Prescott Valley Wednesday night. Amarillo would take an early 1-0 lead but Arizona would score six unanswered goals throughout the remainder of the game to win 6-1 and end a three-game losing streak. Karl Sellan would collect two goals on the night including the game winner at 3:48 of the second period. Kevin Couture got his first win with Arizona in four starts stopping 18 of 19 shots.

Arizona would see its first penalty kill of the night just 42 seconds into the game as Chris Greene would be tagged with two minutes for roughing. Amarillo would be unable to convert on the man advantage but would take a 1-0 lead at the 2:47 mark on a Bill Vandermeer goal from Rich Hansen and Trevor Read. At 17:04 of the first the Sundogs would tie the game at one goal apiece on a Karl Sellan even strength marker. Sellan would skate hard to the net following a Brent Kelly rebound. Cory Stillman would also assist on the play. The goal would be Sellan's 11th of the season and first at even strength.

The Sundogs would take their first lead of the night at 3:48 of the middle period as Sellan would score his second goal of the game and 11th on the power play this season picking up a loose rebound from a Jordan Mowbray shot. Defenseman Dan Laperriere would also be credited with an assist on the power play goal. At the 7:08 mark the Sundogs would take a 3-1 lead as Dan Laperriere would find himself alone at the top of the circle and would fire a wrist shot past Gorillas' netminder Jamie Vandespyker. Kelly and Brad Mehalko would assist on the play. Arizona would grab their fourth goal of the game just over a minute later as Ryan Steeves would tally his 14th goal of the season on passes from Mehalko and Dmitri Leonov.

The Sundogs would continue to dominate in the third period as Jordan Mowbray would grab the Sundogs' fifth unanswered goal of the game at 9:01 on a centering pass from Leonov. At 15:12 of the third the Sundogs' Leonov would grab his second goal of the season on hard work down low skating in front of the net and pushing the puck past Vandespyker. Mehalko and Chris Bartolone would collect assists on the play and close out the game's scoring.

Kevin Couture backstopped Arizona to its first win in four tries deflecting 18 of 19 shots while Jamie Vandespyker stopped 30 of 36 shots in the loss. The Sundogs finished 1-for-4 on the power play while the Gorillas' went 0-for-6 with the man advantage. Next up for the Arizona Sundogs are the Laredo Bucks on Friday, February 2 at the Tim's Toyota Center in Prescott Valley. Game time is set for 7:00pm.
