Eagles Dump Titan to Sweep Weekend Series
BATHURST - The Cape Breton Eagles used two goal games from Brooklyn Kalmikov and Nathan Larose to sweep a two game set against the Acadie-Bathurst Titan on opening weekend. The Eagles posted a 6-3 victory on Saturday afternoon at the KC Irving Centre.
Kalmikov's were the first two of the game, although it took a long time for either team to find the back of the net. It was a nifty individual effort from Kalmikov, dangling through the right face-off circle and then sliding it by Tristan Bérubé, that opened the scoring with a minute to play in the opening stanza.
The third year Eagles forward would find his second of the night not long into the middle period, coming off the boards on the left side to rip a shot through an Ivan Ivan screen. There would be some pushback, though, when Riley Kidney found himself in front of the goal and pushed one through William Grimard to make it 2-1 before the fourth minute mark.
The score would hold past the halfway mark of regulation, when the visitors would get their first power play goal of the season. With Shaun Miller creating traffic in front of the net, Adam McCormick fired a puck by Bérubé to push the edge to 3-1.
There would be more goals in the third period than the opening 40 minutes combined. It didn't take long to get going in the third period- Jarrett Baker scored his first goal as an Eagle with a big shot from the top of the right face-off circle. Then Cape Breton would get two more goals from the blueline- Nathan Larose with his first carer two goal game, with his first marker coming on the power play.
Bathurst would score twice before period's end to make the final score closer. First it was Cole Huckins, getting his own rebound after a nice save by Wiliam Grimard, scoring the first of his QMJHL career. Then Yan Aucoin would finish the scoring with a power play shot through traffic. There would be no further scoring on the day , and the Eagles collected a 6-3 victory.
The Eagles will now return home for their home opener of the 2019-20 season when they take on the Saint John Sea Dogs on Saturday, September 28th.
