Colorado Eagles News Release
AMARILLO, TX- The Colorado Eagles defeated the Amarillo Gorillas 6-3 Saturday night at the Amarillo Civic Center. In the last game of 2005, the Eagles avenged their loss from two weeks earlier to the Gorillas by scoring three first period goals. Colorado finished the 2005 calendar year with a Central Hockey League-best record of 49-11-4 and improved their 2005-06 record to 23-6-1. Five different Eagles scored and Ryan Tobler had two goals including an empty netter. The Eagles have outscored their opponents 28-13 in the last five games and head into 2006 winners of 10 of their last 12 games (10-1-1). Amarillo's record falls to 12-13-2 and they remain in third place in the Southwest Division. The Eagles will return home to the Budweiser Events Center on Wednesday January 4, 2006 to take on the Tulsa Oilers.
Ryan Tobler gave the Eagles an early lead when he shot in a rebound from the slot, he was assisted by Fraser Filipic and Matt Desrosiers giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead at the 3:00 mark of the first period. Eagles defenseman Aaron Grosul gave Colorado a 2-0 lead when he tipped in a Nick Parillo shot passed Gorillas' goaltender Shawn Degagne. The Eagles weren't finished and Matt Desrosiers gave them a three-goal lead when he threw a shot on net from just inside the blue line that went in far post. Colorado had three goals on their first six shots putting the Gorillas in a deep hole. After one period, the Eagles were out shooting Amarillo 10-6 and had one power play goal from Desrosiers.
Only 48 seconds into the second period, Amarillo All-Star Derek Hahn put the Gorillas on the board with his 20th goal of the season. The Eagles quicky took back the momentum on much needed goal by Riley Nelson less than one minute later. Hahn would answer again with a goal coming just off the face cutting the Eagles lead to 4-2, but rookie Garrett Larson again thwarted the Gorillas efforts to come back when he scored a power play goal on assists from defensemen Brad Williamson and Erik Adams. After two periods of play, the Eagles were leading 5-2.
Each team had a goal in the third period, but in the final two minutes after the outcome was inevitable. Keith Rowe scored for Amarillo at the 18:39 mark, they pulled their goaltender, and Ryan Tobler blew out the candle with an empty net goal with 28 seconds remaining.
