Fort Worth Brahmas News Release
Fort Worth - Defenseman Matt Medley and right wing Aaron Phillips scored two goals apiece to lead the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees to a 6-3 win over the Fort Worth Brahmas on Friday night at the Fort Worth Convention Center.
Medley and Phillips paced a balanced Bees attack that overwhelmed a shorthanded Brahmas lineup. Fort Worth began the game with just fourteen skaters due to injuries and roster moves. Early in the second period, Fort Worth lost another player when left wing Wes Mason was forced to leave the game after being hit from behind by Killer Bees defenseman Darcy Smith. The Brahmas finished the game with just thirteen skaters on their bench.
Also scoring in the game for Rio Grande Valley wingers Dwayne Hay and Trevor Weisgerber. Killer Bee center Matic Kralj contributed with four assists.
Fort Worth received goals in the contest from forward Matt Reynolds, forward Ty Hennes, and defenseman Vladimir Hartinger.
Killer Bees netminder Terry Dunbar stopped 23 of the 26 Brahmas shots he faced to earn his fourth win of the season. Fort Worth rookie goaltender Chris Davidson was saddled with the loss, allowing five Killer Bee goals on 30 shots sent his way (the final Rio Grande Valley Killer Bee goal was scored into an empty net).
Fort Worth now has a record of 9-16-4 on the season. The Killer Bees are 15-11-1 for the year.
The Brahmas and the Killer Bees will meet again tomorrow night, Saturday, December 31, at 7:35 p.m. at the Dodge Arena in Hidalgo, Texas. Fans can watch the game action on www.chltv.com.
BRAHMAS ROSTER MOVES:
Difficult circumstances forced the Brahmas to make two roster moves just prior to Friday night's game against the Killer Bees. Rookie forward Mike O'Sullivan was granted leave by the CHL (effective immediately) in order to return to his hometown of Dorchester, Massachusetts to attend the funeral of his grandmother, who passed away on Thursday night. To take O'Sullivan's place on the roster, Fort Worth signed first-year defenseman Mike Kirby. A 25-year old native of Nanaimo, British Columbia, Kirby attended training camp this season with the Lubbock Cotton Kings. He then played in three games for the Corpus Christi Rayz in the month of November. Kirby made his Brahmas debut, wearing #12, in Fort Worth's loss to the Killer Bees.
Also, rookie defensemen Justin Coutu and Matt Coughlin did not dress for Fort Worth on Friday night. Coutu was ill, and Coughlin remained sidelined with an injury he suffered on Friday, Dec. 16 in the Brahmas 6-5 overtime loss at Bossier-Shreveport.
Kirby will play in the Brahmas game at Rio Grande Valley on Saturday night. Coutu and Coughlin will be gametime decisions, as will left wing Wes Mason.
