Lubbock Cotton Kings News Release
Lubbock, Tx - The Lubbock Cotton Kings tallied a season-high four power play goals to march past the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs 5-1 on New Year's Eve to close out the 2005 calendar year and end a three-game home winning streak. Lubbock improved to 14-14-1 with the win and it was their first victory over Bossier-Shreveport since December 14, 2001.
Three of the power plays were tallied in the third period of play in a span of 7:02, as the Cotton Kings went three for six on the power play in the frame. Matt McNeely started it off in the period, extending a 2-1 lead with 9:21 remaining in regulation by playing a rebound from Jason Beatty's shot past 'Bugs goaltender David Cacciola. Josh Anderson followed with a power play marker as 4:15 remained to extend the lead to 4-1. Mudbugs Coach Scott Muscutt voiced his opinion to official Shane Warschaw and it resulted in an additional power play opportunity, which Nolan Graham converted on with 2:19 remaining for his seventh power play goal of the season.
The Mudbugs opened the game's scoring early with a goal 2:22 into the game. Milan Vodrazka and Chad Spurr were each taking their chances on Cotton Kings goaltender Brett Koscielny with shots in front of the net and Vodrazka was finally able to grab a rebound and sneak it past Koscielny and just over the goal line. The Kings tied the game up at 1-1 with 5:56 remaining in the first period with Ryan Moren grabbing his second goal of the season and first inside the Lubbock Municipal Coliseum. Olauson assisted on Moren's goal and then grabbed one of his own 2:18 later, skating end-to-end on a power play and cutting past the defense to get alone on net and sliding the puck past Cacciola for the 2-1 lead and the eventual game winning goal.
Koscielny deservedly earned the win in net, stopping 34 shots on goal for the victory. The performance by Koscielny moved him into the league lead in GAA at 2.20 and into second in save percentage with a save percentage of 92.9%. Bossier-Shreveport leads the league in shots allowed, but the Cotton Kings ignored the Mudbugs average allowance of 27.5 shots and out-shot them 39-34. Lubbock's special teams was a beneficiary in the Kings win as they went 4 for 12 on the power play while holding the 'Bugs to 0 for 10 on their chances. Offensively, 11 of the 14 skaters contributed points for the Kings. Olauson (1g,1a), Moren (1g,1a) and Kyle Nosan (2a) each had multi-point games for the Kings.
Lubbock remains home to complete the three-game homestand Friday night, as the Southwest Division leading Odessa Jackalopes come to the Lubbock Municipal Coliseum.
