Bucks Beat Bats 5-2

LAREDO, Texas - The Laredo Bucks got goals from five different players on Saturday night as they beat the Austin Ice Bats 5-2 in front of a season high crowd of 6,476 fans on New Years Eve 2005 at the Laredo Entertainment Center. The Bucks are 4-0-0 against Austin this year as they picked up their fourth straight win and they have recorded points in five straight. Laredo is 19-8-3 with a Southeast Division and Southern Conference best 41 points. The Bucks are home this Friday night against the Youngstown SteelHounds. Laredo tallied the only goal of the first period. Forward Nick Warriner, who had just come off the 14-day injured reserve, jammed in a loose puck on a goalmouth scramble at 5:53. Warriner's seventh of the year gave the Bucks a 1-0 lead. Laredo out shot Austin 18-7 in the period, but were 0-6 on the power play.

In the second period the Bucks finally cracked thru on the power play. Forward Jeff Bes spun into the Austin zone then passed the puck rink wide to waiting forward James Hiebert who one-timed it home for a power play goal at 7:16. It was the eleventh of the season for Hiebert, tying him for the team lead. Laredo then extended their lead to 3-0 as defenseman Serge Dube converted a sweet rink wide pass from Bes for another power play goal at 14:57. It was Dube's tenth of the season. The Ice Bats answered on the power play as forward Jeff Neufeld put in a loose puck at 16:36 to make it a 3-1 game.

In the third the Bucks added to their lead. Forward Brett Arcand-Kootenay slipped in a loose puck at 6:20 for a 4-1 lead with his seventh of the season. At 13:50 forward Igor Agarunov converted a shorthanded chance, the Bucks league leading 11th ‘shorty' of the year, on a pass from Hiebert at 13:50 to make it 5-1 Laredo. Austin added a late goal as Neufeld got his second of the game on a power play chance with 35 seconds left. FINAL SCORE Laredo 5, Austin 2.

Dov Grumet-Morris stopped 19 of 21 shots and got the win to improve to 6-2-1. Miguel Beaudry allowed five goals on 42 shots and fell to 1-3-0 with Austin. The Bucks went 2-10 on the power play while Austin was 2-7. The Bucks out shot the Ice Bats 42-21.
