Eagles Defeat Cotton Kings 5-2

LUBBOCK, TX- The Colorado Eagles defeated the Lubbock Cotton Kings 5-2 Saturday night at the Lubbock Municipal Coliseum and improved their record to 12-4-0. Five different Eagles scored and four players had multiple-point games as the Eagles won their first game in three tries. Colorado had two shorthanded tallies adding to their league-lead with 12 goals while on the penalty kill. Marco Emond made 35 saves on 37 shots and won his 10th game of the season. The Eagles head to Colorado for a road game against the Rocky Mountain Rage on Wednesday night at the Broomfield Event Center at 7:05 p.m. MST.

The Eagles again found themselves killing penalties early in the first period. Sean Robertson was whistled twice in the first five minutes of the game, but the Eagles added to their league-lead with their 12th shorthanded goal of the season during Robertson's second penalty. Chris Hartsburg came in unassisted and scored his seventh goal of the season. Trevor Weisgerber tied the game at one at the 11:36 mark on assists from Bobby Brown and Kyle Nosan. The teams skated to a 1-1 tie after one period with Colorado leading in shots 16-15.

Colorado opened up the scoring only 29 seconds into the second period on another shorthanded goal by Riley Nelson, his sixth shorthanded goal of the season. The goal marked the Eagles 12th goal with a man down tying their team record for most shorthanded goals in a season. Ed McGrane gave the Eagles a 3-1 lead at the 10:10 mark of the period on assists from Aaron Schneekloth and Ryan Tobler. Lubbock quickly struck back on a goal by Chris Barth just 1:28 after the Eagles took the two-goal lead. Ryan Tobler returned the favor and made the score 4-2 on the Eagles first power play goal in four games. He took a nice pass from Scott Polaski and beat goaltender Kyle Stanton. Finally, the Eagles scored their fourth goal of the period when Brad Williamson tallied his third goal of the season on assists from Ryan Tobler and Riley Nelson. Colorado took the 5-2 lead into the third period.

No goals were scored in the third period, although Riley Nelson was awarded a penalty shot. He did not convert, but it marked the second time this season the Eagles have been given a penalty shot. Colorado was only awarded one penalty shot in their first three seasons and already have two this season converting on one of those tries. The Eagles out shot the Cotton Kings 53-37 including 23-6 in the second period. Colorado remains in first place in the Northwest Division with a record of 12-4-0 and 24 points, they are four points ahead of the Oklahoma City Blazers.
