Bucks Fall 4-3 To Austin In OT

LAREDO, Texas - The defending CHL President's Cup Champion Laredo Bucks rallied from a 3-0 deficit to get a standings point as they fell 4-3 in sudden death overtime to the Austin Ice Bats in front of 5,002 at the LEC on Saturday. The Buck are now 9-6-2 with 20 points and in second place in the Southeast Division. Laredo is in Corpus Christi on Sunday, then returns home on Wednesday for the annual McDonald's Kids Day Matinee Game against Corpus Christi at 11 a.m. at the LEC. Tickets are $8.50 for all ages. The Bucks are offering a family four pack of season tickets for the 2006-07 CHL regular season, which works out to just over $7 a seat per game and is a 48 % savings off walkup prices. The Ice Bats scored first when forward Tim Earl ripped home a big slap shot from the high slot at 12:15 of period number one. Austin extended their lead to 2-0 as forward Jason Kenyon chopped home a rebound at 16:33.

Just 48 seconds into the second period the Ice Bats extended their lead to 3-0 as forward Mike Possin cut in and scored. The Bucks got on the scoreboard when forward Ladislav Kouba converted a backdoor pass from forward Serge Dube at 14:08 for his fourth of the season. After the goal was scored there was a glass delay and the officials sent the teams to the locker room for the second intermission.

After returning from the locker room the Bucks scored on a power play chance as forward Kris McPhee redirected a shot by defenseman Adam Rivet into the net at 16:07 to bring Laredo within 3-2. It was MacPhee's fifth of the year. Heading to the third period down a goal the Bucks once again capitalized on a power play chance. Forward Jeff Bes found forward Serge Dube in the slot for a wrist shot into the top corner of the net at 7:40 to tie the game at 3-3. It was the sixth of the season for Dube. Neither team scored down the stretch and the game headed to overtime.

In sudden death the Bucks had a chance to win the game on a power play, but failed to convert. Austin then went on the power play and forward Julian Smith ended the game when he banged in a rebound at 3:59 of overtime. FINAL SCORE Austin 4, Laredo 3 in sudden death.

Mike DiLorenzo allowed three goals on 11 shots in 20:48 of work and did not factor in the decision. Eric Marvin came on in relief and was terrific stopping 23 of 24 shots in 43:11, but took the tough luck loss and is now 4-3-2. Kevin Couture stopped 31 of 34 and got the win to improve to 3-3-0. The Bucks were 2-8 on the power play, while Austin went 1-7. Austin out shot the Bucks 35-34.
