Colorado Eagles News Release
WINDSOR, Colo. - The Colorado Eagles, proud affiliate of the NHL's Winnipeg Jets & the AHL's St. John's IceCaps, announced today the signing of Matt Duffy, a 6-foot-2-inch, 200-pound defenseman who was a 4th round pick of the Florida Panthers in the 2005 NHL entry draft (#104 overall). After stocking up on forwards in the offseason, Duffy is the third defenseman in a row to be announced as signing with the team as the Eagles prepare to open their preseason camp this Friday in preparation for their first ECHL season.
The Windham, Maine native has spent the past three seasons playing in the ECHL and AHL. In 132 pro games, the right-handed shooting defenseman has tallied 39 points (12-27-39) and 89 penalty minutes.
Prior to turning pro, Duffy led the Eastern Junior Hockey League in goals by a defenseman (19) in 2004-05, before playing four strong seasons at the well-respected University of Maine. In 135 games with the Black Bears, Duffy recorded 42 points -- with an even split of 21 goals and 21 assists -- and just 164 PIMs.
"Matt's skill set fits in very well with the type of hockey we like to play," said Eagles general manager & head coach Chris Stewart. "He possesses great speed and skill, and his first pass out of the defensive zone will help our entire team click offensively."
The Eagles will begin their preseason camp this Friday, Sept. 30. They will then travel to Alaska for preseason games on Oct. 4 & 5 before playing their only preseason game at the Budweiser Events Center on Friday, Oct. 7 against the Las Vegas Wranglers.
The 2011-12 ECHL regular season begins on Friday, Oct. 14, with the Eagles' home-opener taking place on Friday, Oct. 21. A complete schedule can be found at www.ColoradoEagles.com.
