Eagles Add Another Scorer, Another Penner

WINDSOR, Colo. - The Governors' Cup champion Colorado Eagles announced today the signing of forwards Brett Lutes and Alex Penner. Lutes -- a seventh round draft pick by the St. Louis Blues in 2000 -- is an established offensive threat and Penner -- younger brother of Eagles' goaltender Andrew -- is known for his physical play.

"I believe you win championships with a combination of speed and skill & character and toughness. We have added depth in both areas with these two acquisitions," said Colorado Eagles President & General Manager Chris Stewart. "Lutes will add to an already potent offensive attack and Penner will help keep other teams honest."

Lutes, a 6-foot-1-inch, 195-pound winger, has recorded 258 points (107-151-258) in 312 professional games (48 of them in Europe), most of them with the Bakersfield Condors of the ECHL. In 2005-06, while playing for Port Huron of the UHL, the Riverview, New Brunswick native led the team in goals (23), assists (30) and points (53).

Lutes' best season came in 2006-07 when he established career highs in goals (34), assists (36) and points (70) in 67 games, ranking second on the Condors that season. He sits among the top ten in Condors franchise history in the following categories: games (10th), points (T-6th), goals (5th), assists (9th), hat tricks (T-2nd), playoff points (T-5th), playoff assists (4th) and playoff games (7th).

Penner will be entering his third professional season. His career began in 2007-08 with the CHL's Laredo Bucks where he registered six points and 186 PIMs in 53 games. Last season, the 6-foot-4-inch, 225-pound winger played 38 games for the Johnstown Chiefs (ECHL) and eight for the Lake Erie Monsters (AHL) -- both Colorado Avalanche affiliates -- while putting up four points and 161 PIMs. In his career, Penner has averaged 3.5 penalty minutes per game.

The 2009-10 regular season starts with a President's Cup finals rematch against the Texas Brahmas on Friday, October 16.
