February 10, 2023 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Cape Breton Eagles News Release
NOTES FROM THE GAME - Strong starts to periods one & three carried the Shawinigan Cataractes to a 5-4 win over the Cape Breton Eagles Friday night in Shawinigan.
- The Cataractes built a 3-0 lead after the opening period, the Eagles tied the game in the second period before Shawinigan re-took the lead in the third peirod.
- Trevor Thurston & Olivier Houde each notched a goal and an assist for the Eagles, Cam Squires & Jacob Newcombe scored for the Eagles while Ivan Ivan picked up two assists.
Shawinigan came out with the early jump, as Stéphane Jr Huard scored the first goal in the opening minute, with Félix Lacerte & Lorenzo Canonica drawing the assists. The same trio picked up points on the next goal, less than four minutes later, when Canonica finished a passing play from Huard to make it 2-0.
Holding a 2-0 lead late in the period, the Cataractes would add to their edge when they converted on their second power play of the night. Isaac Ménard put a shot through traffic and it was 3-0 at the end of the opening frame.
The Eagles were undeterred by trailing 3-0 and came out on fire in the second stanza, outshooting Shawinigan 21-7. The breakthrough came early on the power play as Cam Squires ripped a shot through a well-placed Angelo Fullerton screen. Before the five-minute mark of the period, the margin was down to a goal when a Trevor Thurston shot from the blueline beat Rémi Delafontaine.
The visiting pressure continued through the period and the tying goal came in the final two minutes of period two. Ivan Ivan flipped the puck to Thurston who made a quick pass to Olivier Houde, who fired it over the goal line and the teams were tied after the second siren.
Unfortunately for the Eagles, the pendulum swung back the way of the home side thanks to some special teams. Penalties to Ivan Ivan and Antoine Roy put Shawinigan on a 1:45 long five on three. The Cataractes took advantage of the open ice and Huard found his second goal of the game. The Eagles were able to kill off the second minor, but Canonica ripped a shot coming down the left wing at even strength to make it a 5-3 game.
The Eagles would show more pushback. After killing a late minor to Tomas Lavoie, goaltender Oliver Satny was lifted for an extra attacker in the final minute for an extra attacker. It wouldn't take long for the Eagles to find the back of the net as Jacob Newcombe tipped a Conor Shortall point shot by Delafontaine to make it a 5-4 score.
Not long after the centre ice faceoff, Satny was off to the bench again but this time the Eagles were unable to find the back of the net, and Shawinigan skated away with a 5-4 victory.
Delafontaine picked up the win, stopping 34 of 37 shots. Satny took the loss, stopping 20 of 25.
The Eagles will finish the first half of their road trip tomorrow night in Blainville-Boisbriand against the Armada. Puck drop is 8 PM Atlantic time.
