FRISCO, TEXAS - The Houston Dynamo and FC Dallas played to a 1-1 draw in a weather-delayed Texas Derby Thursday night at Toyota Stadium.
The match began on schedule at 8:08 p.m. CDT but was delayed after three minutes and 55 seconds due to significant puddling on the field. The teams returned to the locker rooms and the game resumed at 10:04 p.m. following a delay of one hour and 52 minutes. The match ended at 11:53 p.m.
MF Fabian Castillo created the opening goal for FC Dallas, beating Dynamo D Jalil Anibaba to the endline before driving a low cross through the six-yard box to MF Ryan Hollingshead, unmarked at the back post, for an easy finish from four yards and a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute.
Dynamo MF Ricardo Clark pulled the Dynamo even with a trademark strike from distance. The 14-year professional ran onto a loose ball 10 yards beyond the edge of the box and ripped a shot into the upper right corner of the goal in the 51st minute.
It was Clark's second goal of the season. He scored the first in similar fashion at San Jose on May 11. It was also Clark's sixth goal against FC Dallas in his Dynamo career to become the all-time scorer in the Houston-Dallas series.
The Dynamo nearly seized the lead seven minutes later as FW Will Bruin collected a FC Dallas turnover and led the break, slipping a pass to MF Andrew Wenger, who was denied by Seitz from 12 yards. Wenger pounced on the rebound but was unable to put his second effort on target.
Soon after, a wonderful free kick from MF Cristian Maidana was met with a free header by D Raul Rodriguez, but he missed wide from eight yards.
Houston had two good chances in the first half. Clark fired from 15 yards at a tight angle and forced a save from Seitz in the 32nd minute. Nine minutes later, the Dynamo counterattacked after an FC Dallas free kick and MF Boniek GarcÃa struck his shot well but missed wide of the far post from 20 yards.
Thursday was the second match for the Dynamo under the guidance of assistant coach Wade Barrett led the team on Saturday, along with assistant coaches Paul Caffrey and Paul Rogers.
The Dynamo will now take a two-week break from MLS play in conjunction with the start of Copa América, set to begin Friday. The Dynamo host San Antonio FC (USL) in the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup on June 15 at BBVA Compass Stadium.
