Norfolk Tides News Release
Durham's Andrew Sonnanstine allowed seven hits over eight shutout innings, out-dueling Garrett Olson and the Norfolk Tides 3-0 Friday night.
Sonnanstine, who was named the top pitcher in the International League a week ago, continued his hot stretch with another scoreless outing. The 24-year-old right-hander walked one while striking out five, helping Durham split the four-game series.
Norfolk only mounted one serious threat against Sonnanstine (3-2), stringing together three hits in the third inning. Alberto Castillo and Eider Torres began the inning with back-to-back singles through the right side, and Brandon Fahey followed by dropping a bunt-single down the third base side to load the bases. Sonnanstine escaped the threat however by striking out Cesar Crespo and J.R. House, then retiring Mike Cervenak on a fly ball to left field.
Garrett Olson (0-3) was the hard-luck loser for Norfolk, despite turning in his best outing of the season. The 23-year-old southpaw struck out a season-high ten batters without issuing a walk, yielding two runs on four base hits.
Olson's only blemish came in the third inning, as former Tide Jorge Velandia led off the frame with a triple into right-center field and scored on a single by Justin Ruggiano. Two outs later, Dustan Mohr lined a double into right-center field to plate Ruggiano and give the Bulls a 2-0 lead.
After Mohr's double, Olson retired the final 13 batters he faced - eight of which by strikeout.
Durham extended their lead to 3-0 in the 9th inning on an RBI single by Wes Bankston off of Tides' reliever Paul Shuey.
Chad Orvella worked around a one-out single in the 9th inning to record his 5th save of the year.
The Tides welcome in the Charlotte Knights for a two-game set beginning Saturday night at Harbor Park. Jim Johnson (0-0, 2.81) is scheduled to take the mound for Norfolk against Charlotte's Lance Broadway (0-1, 3.04). First pitch is slated for 7:15 p.m.
