Calgary Vipers News Release
Former Calgary Vipers player Carlos Duncan came back to hurt his team in a big way with two home runs in the Victoria Seals 5-3 victory at Royal Athletic Park in Victoria, British Columbia. Duncan hit the tying homer in the fifth inning and then the go-ahead shot in the seventh to lift the Seals to the win. With the loss Calgary drops to 12-7 but remain in sole possession of first place in the Golden Baseball League's North Division.
Isaac Hess (3-0) was brilliant on the mound for Victoria going seven innings for the win in giving up only three hits and one earned run while striking out six. Frank James (0-1) took the loss after giving up the home run to Duncan in the seventh. In the sixth inning Vipers pitcher Andrew DeMott came into the game with two runners on and nobody out and was able to maneuver out of the inning scoreless by getting three consecutive ground balls. DeMott has now thrown 11 scoreless innings this season in his professional debut.
Calgary opened the scoring right away in the top of the first inning as reigning GBL player of the week Fehlandt Lentini doubled and scored on a Nelson Castro run batted in single for a 1-0 lead.
The Snakes doubled their lead to 2-0 in the second frame as Drew Miller walked, Ivan Reyes reached on a fielding error by third baseman and former Viper Carlos Duncan, and Colin Moro reached on a fielder's choice which on the same play second baseman Wilver Perez threw away a double-play attempt to allow Miller to score.
Victoria cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth inning to 2-1 as Sergio Pedroza singled, stole second base, and scored on a clutch two-out RBI base hit by Brett Flowers. With two runners on and two outs Calgary left-fielder Miller made a great sliding backhanded catch in foul territory to end the inning with the defensive gem of the game.
The Seals tied the game in the bottom of the sixth frame as Duncan homered for the first time with his new club for the 2-2 score.
Duncan was back at it again in the bottom of the seventh inning as after Chris Van Rossum reached on an error by first-baseman Clint Johnston he hit his second long ball of the game for the 4-2 advantage.
Calgary got within one run at 4-3 in the next half inning as Reyes doubled, Colin Moro singled, and Lentini hit into a double-play to allow Reyes to cross the plate.
That run was taken right back in the bottom of the eighth as Jamar Hill hit a solo home run for the 5-3 lead.
