Victoria Seals News Release
Victoria, BC - Starting a six game home-and-home series against the Calgary Vipers, the Victoria Seals returned home to Royal Athletic Park on Friday night. With Calgary turning to Joe Sergent (2-1) on the mound, the Seals responded with Isaac Hess (2-0) in game one.
A lead-off double from Golden Baseball League Player of the Week Fehlandt Lentini got the ball rolling for the Vipers in the top of the first inning. Followed up with an RBI single from Nelson Castro, Calgary took a 1-0 lead through one frame. Back-to-back errors from the Seals would allow the Vipers to double their advantage in the second, scoring Drew Miller after an earlier walk.
Following a scoreless third frame, Victoria began to chip away at the 2-0 score in the bottom of the third inning. After Sergio Pedroza singled to open the inning, a two-out hit up the middle from Brett Flowers cut the Calgary lead in half.
Former Viper Carlos Duncan then went to work for the Seals, tying the game in the bottom of the fourth with a solo shot, breaking a six-game home run drought for Victoria. In his next at-bat, this time in the bottom of the seventh inning, Duncan hit a two-run blast to right field to put the home side out front 4-2.
With the Vipers drawing within one in the top of the eighth, on the back of a lead-off double from Ivan Reyes, Victoria responded again in the bottom of the frame. Left fielder Jamar Hill took just the third pitch from relief pitcher Cody Cillo across Pembroke Street to restore the Seals' two-run advantage.
Turning to Javier Garcia in the top of the ninth, the Seals locked down their seventh win this year, and first over the Vipers by a 5-3 final. Garcia picked up his league-leading fifth save of the season with a pair of strikeouts in the final frame.
Isaac Hess was stellar in the winning effort once again, allowing just three hits and improving to 3-0 on the year. The Vipers' third pitcher on the night, Frank James, falls to 0-1 with the loss. Carlos Duncan burned his old team with a pair of home runs, finishing 3-for-5 with three RBI's on the night.
