Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release
SUGAR LAND, TX - The Sugar Land Space Cowboys, playing as the Dulces de Sugar Land (6-12), took a seventh-inning lead over the Las Vegas Aviators, playing as the Las Vegas Reyes de Plata (8-11), but surrendered three late runs in a 5-3 defeat on Friday night at Constellation Field.
With the game square at 1-1 heading to the seventh, Las Vegas moved in front for the first time on two hits and an error. A potential third runs was cut down at home plate on a throw from Bligh Madris, bringing the top of the frame to a close with Sugar Land trailing 2-1.
Ross Adolph was hit by a pitch with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, bringing up Michael Sandle, who crushed a go-ahead two-run homer to left, his first of the year with Sugar Land, giving the Dulces a 3-2 advantage. Luke Berryhill followed with a triple off RHP Garrett Acton (W, 2-1) but was left stranded at third as the right-hander struck out the next two hitters.
RHP Bryan Garcia returned for Sugar Land in the top of the eight and got a lineout before Tyler Soderstrom doubled to left, putting the tying run in scoring position. Garcia struck out Cody Thomas for the second out in the inning and was replaced by LHP Blake Taylor (L, 0-1). The southpaw got an infield bouncer from Trenton Brooks that took a slow, high hop over the mound for an infield single, and Dermis García tripled in both runners to vault Las Vegas back in front 4-3. The Reyes de Plata added another run in the ninth on a solo home run by Kyle McCann and RHP Rico Garcia (S,1) issued a walk and struck out three in a scoreless ninth.
The Dulces de Sugar Land started the night with a bang as Pedro León hit a lead-off home run to center, his second of the year, pushing Sugar Land to an immediate 1-0 lead. RHP Shawn Dubin allowed just two hits for the Dulces in five innings of work and gave up just one run on a solo home run to Jonah Bride in the fifth.
Sugar Land continues their six-game series against Las Vegas on Saturday night. RHP Misael Tamarez (0-0, 5.79) is set to take the hill for the Dulces de Sugar Land opposite Reyes de Plata RHP Colton Eastman (0-2, 5.19) for a 6:05 pm first pitch at Constellation Field.
