Long Island Ducks News Release
(Central Islip, N.Y.) - The Long Island Ducks and Camden Riversharks split a doubleheader in front of 6,376 fans at Citibank Park on Friday evening. With the Ducks win in the first game and an earlier Atlantic City victory, the field for the 2006 Atlantic League Playoffs has been set. Long Island will take on Bridgeport in the best-of-three North Division Playoffs, while Lancaster will head to Atlantic City in the South. Both series will open up on Tuesday evening.
In game one, Long Island fired on all cylinders with a 14-hit outing by their offense and a one-hit shutout from pitcher Luis Arroyo (1-0) in a 9-0 victory over Camden. The southpaw allowed just a Denny Abreu single in the opening frame, then allowed just one more runnerer to reach base over the remainder of his seven innings. Offensively, the club was led by Bucky Jacobsen who finished the night 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI, while slugger Henry Rodriguez belted a three-run home run.
Game two of the twin bill saw Camden edge Long Island 3-2. With the score tied at one heading into the third, the Riversharks took the lead for good when Lino Connell got an RBI single before the club added a third run in the sixth. Kevin Haverbusch brought the game within one with his ninth home run of the season in the sixth, but the club's comeback was cut short when Chris Fussell pitched a scoreless seventh to record his league-leading 23rd save of the season. Pete Hartmann (10-6) absorbed the loss after allowing three runs on seven hits in a complete game effort. Damien Myers notched the win after holding Long Island to one run over five innings.
The Ducks and Riversharks will play game three of their four-game set tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. Chris King and David Weiss will call all of the action starting at 6:50 p.m. on WLIE 540 AM and on www.liducks.com. Following the game's final out, Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage will provide a Grucci Post-Game Fireworks Extravaganza. Tickets for this and all Ducks regular season and playoff home games can be purchased by stopping by the Citibank Park Box Office in person (M-F, 10-6; Saturdays 10-2), visiting www.liducks.com or by calling 631-940-TIXX today.
