
Surf defeat Bears 4-2, clinch playoff berth

NEWARK, NJ - September 22, 2006 - With the scored tied at 2 in the bottom of the sixth inning Atlantic City Surf left-fielder Joe Jiannetti delivered a one-out two-run home run to put the Surf ahead to stay 4-2 against the Newark Bears Friday evening at Bernie Robbins Stadium. With the win, the Atlantic City Surf clinched the South Division for the second half and earned a playoff berth to the 2006 Atlantic League playoffs.
Bears starter Shaun Babula (0-2) took the loss in just his second career start allowing four runs on six hits in six innings striking out six. Babula began the sixth inning by walking shortstop Raul Marval. Following a strikeout to right-fielder Ozzie Timmons, Jiannetti hit his 20th home run of the season. Jiannetti finished the game 1-for-2 with a walk, home run, and two runs scored, as he extended his hitting streak to 20 games.
For the Bears, catcher Victor Valencia ended the game 1-for-4 including his 17th home run of the season in the top of the second inning to put the Bears ahead 1-0, and first baseman Victor Rodriguez went 1-for-4 with an RBI double in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game at 2.
Jeff Blitstein (2-1) earned the victory allowing two runs on three hits in seven innings, and Jamie Tricoglou earned his third save of the season with a perfect ninth inning, striking out two.
The Bears and Surf will play game two of the three game series Saturday evening at Bernie Robbins Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 pm.
