Lancaster Stormers News Release

The hopes of the Lancaster Barnstormers to sweep a series on Long Island were quickly dashed early Sunday evening.

Long Island struck for seven runs in the bottom of the second inning and cruised to a 10-2 victory over the 'Stormers in the series finale after the Barnstormers had taken the first two contests.

Kelly Dugan singled home Alejandro De Aza in the top of the first to gain a quick lead off Hunter Caudelle (1-0). Tommy Shirley (2-2) threw a 1-2-3 inning for the Barnstormers in the home half of the inning. The script quickly flipped in the second.

L.J. Mazzilli walked leading off the second and took third on a single by Deibinson Romero off the glove of shortstop Cleuluis Rondon. Ramon Flores singled through the right side for the first run. A double to right by Nick Bottari put Long Island in the lead to stay. Shirley hit Sal Giardina with a pitch, and a bases loaded single to left by Johnni Turbo made it 3-0.

Shirley appeared on his way out of the woods when Vladimir Frias grounded into a 6-4-3 double play, but Steve Lombardozzi walked to keep the inning alive. Lew Ford doubled home two more runs and scored on a single by Mazzilli to cap the seven-run frame.

Anthony Peroni singled home De Aza in the third, but the Barnstormers never collected another hit on the evening.

Shirley lasted through five, giving up an eighth run on a double by Frias in the bottom of the fourth. Single runs scored off Brent Teller and Tyler LaPorte. Yoel Espinal pitched a scoreless inning for the Barnstormers.

The series shifts to Clipper Magazine Stadium for three games beginning on Tuesday at 6:30. Lancaster will send Zach Smith (0-1) to the mound against Anderson De Leon (3-1). Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, beginning at 6:25.
