
Ducks Fall Short in Series Opener with Bluefish

(Bridgeport, Conn., July 24, 2015) - The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Bridgeport Bluefish 5-3 on Friday night in the opener of a three-game series at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard.
Bridgeport scratched out a run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. A sacrifice bunt from Bryant Nelson advanced Josh Prince to third base with one out. Ducks starter Darin Downs then threw a wild pitch, allowing Prince to score from third. Long Island took a 2-1 lead in the fourth on a run-scoring throwing error from Nelson and a RBI double from Jon Griffin off of Bridgeport starter D.J. Mitchell.
The Bluefish went ahead 4-2 with three runs in the sixth. A RBI single from Welington Dotel and a two-run single from Andres Rodriguez put Bridgeport on top. The ¬ËFish padded the lead with another Dotel RBI single in the seventh. Long Island plated a run in the ninth on a run-scoring double play from Griffin, but could not complete the comeback.
Mitchell (5-7) earned the win, tossing eight innings, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out six. Downs (0-2) took the loss, surrendering four runs on five hits with three strikeouts in five and two-thirds innings. Nick Struck pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the Ducks. Patrick Mincey earned his 17th save for Bridgeport.
Cody Puckett finished with two runs and a single for the Ducks. Griffin finished with a double and RBI.
Long Island continues their three-game set with the cross-sound rival Bridgeport Bluefish on Saturday night. Game time is slated for 6:05 p.m. from The Ballpark at Harbor Yard. Righty John Brownell takes the mound for the Ducks against Bluefish southpaw Scott Maine. Fans can follow all of the action live on the Ducks' flagship radio station 103.9-FM LI News Radio. The Ducks return home on Tuesday, July 28 to open up a three-game series against the Somerset Patriots. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 5:35 (5:20 for full season ticket holders).
