Bridgeport Bluefish News Release

(Waldorf, MD - July 23, 2015) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (10-4, 36-48) defeated by the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (7-7, 49-35) 7-0 at Regency Furniture Stadium on Thursday night to take three of four games in the series. Bridgeport has now won 12 of their last 16 games overall, and remain in first place in the Second Half Liberty Division Standings, one-half game ahead of the Somerset Patriots. Five Bluefish pitchers combined to allow just one hit in the ballgame, registering their eighth shutout of the season.

Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Cody Scarpeta (1-0) earned the win, tossing five scoreless and hitless innings, striking out four and not allowing a walk. The right hander posted his first quality start of the season, and in two starts on the bump since the All-Star Break, he is yet to allow a run in nine innings pitched to go along with six strikeouts. Southern Maryland Starting Pitcher Daryl Thompson (3-2) was tagged with the loss, pitching six innings, surrendering five runs on ten hits, walking two and striking out seven. The Bluefish have won six of the last eight head-to-head meetings against the First Half Freedom Division Champions.

Bridgeport took a 5-0 lead off Thompson in the top half of the fourth inning and never looked back. Wilson Batista drove home Welington Dotel with the first run of the game, blasting an RBI triple that split the outfielders in left center. With runners at the corners, Brandon Jones laced an RBI single to right field, plating Batista for the 2-0 edge. With the bases loaded with 'Fish, Matt Wessinger belted a two-run single to center field, scoring Andres Rodriguez and Jones. Bryant Nelson capped the rally with an RBI base knock of his own, as Luis Rodriguez crossed the plate with the fifth and final run of the inning for Bridgeport. In 14 games played with the Bluefish since coming over from Lancaster after the All-Star Break, the switch-hitting Nelson is batting .373 with six runs scored and seven driven home.

Scarpetta left the game after five innings of work, having faced 19 batters and throwing 68 pitches (46 strikes). Bridgeport's bullpen did the rest, continuing to be a major reason for the team's latest success. Sam Gervacio, Robert Carson, Scott Shuman, and Erik Draxton retired 12 of the 13 batters they faced, striking out three. Bridgeport collected 13 hits on the night, marking the 30th time this season they have had 10 or more hits in a single game. Nelson and Jones led the way for the 'Fish with three base knocks each.

The Bluefish return to the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Friday, July 24th when they welcome in their cross-sound rival Long Island Ducks for a three game weekend set as the 2015 Ferry Cup Series continues. Five-time World Series Champion Paul O'Neill will guest manage the team on what is guaranteed to be a very exciting start to the weekend in the Park City. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
