Dubuque Shuts Down Sioux City, 2-1

December 15, 2018 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

The Fighting Saints played one of their best defensive games of the season and shutdown the Sioux City Musketeers most of the night in a 2-1 victory. Logan Pietila and Matias Maccelli scored first period power play goals as the Fighting Skates secured four of a possible six points on their final overnight road trip of the season. Martin Pospisil scored the lone goal for the Musketeers.

-Matthew Thiessen was his usual solid self in the victory for Dubuque. The netminder made 23 stops for the Fighting Saints to get his seventh win of the season. Thiessen didn't make the usual amount of highlight reel saves he usually does, but he made the saves he needed to.

-Matias Maccelli is on fire and then some for Dubuque. The Saints winger has a 14-game point streak as he netted a goal and an assist in tonight's game. Maccelli has tied the longest point streak of the season in the USHL. Pospisil is the other player who notched points in 14 straight.

-Maccelli's streak has spanned over a month for the Fighting Saints. He started the streak with three points in a win over Waterloo on November 3rd. Maccelli also has five straight games with two points as he continues to pile up the multi-point games. Maccelli now sits second in the USHL in scoring.

-Aidan Fulp had two assists in the game and is working his way up the scoring charts for the Fighting Saints. Fulp, since returning from an injury, has nine points. Fulp's nine points have come in the last eight games for the Fighting Saints.

-James Sanchez continued his point streak as well for the Fighting Saints. Not be outdone by teammate Maccelli, Sanchez has points in 12 straight games which is the second longest streak in the USHL this season. Sanchez missed two games due to suspension last weekend.

-Dubuque is now 4-1-3 in their last eight games as the points continue to come for the Fighting Saints. After a rugged series against the Lumberjacks, the Fighting Saints continued their steady play. Dubuque had a chance to roll over after back to back loses in overtime and a shootout, instead they put on a clinic and grabbed two points to head in to the break.

-Pospisil was much more noticeable in this one than the was last night. Almost every shift gave Sioux City a chance to score with Pospisil on the ice. The Musketeers played a good series with three of their top forwards out of the lineup.

-Power plays accounted for all of the scoring. The Fighting Saints scored twice on the PP in the first. The first goal took six seconds to find the back of the net and the second took 18 seconds to hit pay-dirt. Pospisil's goal was also a power play tally.

Dubuque will now have 11 days off before they next hit the ice on December 27th against the Green Bay Gamblers. Dubuque then finishes out 2018 at home with games on the 29th and 30th.
