Dubuque Drops Low-Scoring Affair to Waterloo, 2-1

All of the scoring occurred in the first six minutes of the game and Waterloo did just enough to overtake the Fighting Saints, 2-1 on Friday night. Waterloo scored twice in the first five minutes and the game winner was scored by Joe Cassetti on the power play. Dubuque fell to 0-3 this season in Waterloo but played by far their most competitive game of the season in Waterloo.
-After a 44-save shutout in his last start, Matthew Thiessen was once again solid for the Saints. Despite allowing a first goal that he probably should have stopped; Thiessen was still great on the night. He made a few key stops to keep the game at a one goal deficit.
-The Fighting Saints had multiple chances after their first goal but couldn't solve the riddle of Evan Fear. Fear, who Waterloo grabbed from Green Bay, had already shutout the Saints twice this season. Though he didn't post a shutout, he still put together a solid game between the pipes to grab the win.
-The game was decided in the first six minutes, but it didn't feel like it. Dubuque pushed till the last second ticked off the clock, recording a few quality chances late with the goalie pulled. The Saints threw 28 shots on net.
-With the win, Waterloo clinched the Dupaco Cowbell Cup for the third straight year. The Cup is given to the team with the best record during the season series between Waterloo, Dubuque and Cedar Rapids. Waterloo is tied with CR at the top of the standings but have the tiebreaker over the RoughRiders.
-In addition to the Cowbell Cup, Waterloo kept pace with Sioux Falls in the hunt for second in the West. Both teams are now tied with 83 points after 2-1 wins. Whoever is up in points after tomorrow night will get a first-round bye in the Clark Cup Playoffs.
-Speaking of the playoffs, nothing has been decided in terms of who Dubuque will play. CR, Youngstown and Chicago all won, meaning the teams and scenarios remain the same heading in to tomorrow night. Dubuque could wind up with any of the three and their result against Waterloo will not determine what happens in the playoff matchups.
-Tomorrow's game will be the regular season finale for Dubuque. It will also be their last home game until, at the very earliest, the 23rd of April. Dubuque will have to spend the entire first round on the road and the first two games of the second round if they get there as well.
-The Fighting Saints have won their only game of the season against the Black Hawks at home and will look to do so again. They won 4-3 on November 3 rd on a late goal from Logan Pietila.
