Dubuque Comeback Bid Falls Short in 6-4 Loss to Des Moines

The Saints comeback bid fell just short on Sunday afternoon, as the Des Moines Buccaneers used a big lead early to win 6-4. The Bucs jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after one period and despite getting as close as one goal, Dubuque could not equalize.
-The Buccaneers got an early jump on the Saints, scoring 3:22 into the first period. Paul Davey got the Bucs off to the quick start with his second of the weekend and fifth on the season.
-Des Moines poured it on toward the midway mark of the period, getting two more quick goals right around the 10-minute mark. Lucas Mercuri and Zakary Karpa scored 11 seconds apart to chase Hobie Hedquist from the game.
-Noah Ellis scored shortly after the goalie switch to give Des Moines a commanding 4-0 lead.
-Dubuque did just what they needed, getting an early goal to start the second period. Stephen Halliday ripped his fifth of the season short side past Josh Langford.
-Despite the early tally, Des Moines was able to wrestle the momentum away from the Saints when Karpa scored his second of the game. The four-goal lead for Des Moines was reinstated midway through the period.
-Dubuque tallied late in the second to bring it back within two. Daniyal Dzhaniyev took a slick feed from Stephen Halliday and potted his ninth of the year. Halliday recorded his first two points of the week to break out of a mini-scoring slump.
-Dubuque continued to churn their legs and made up more ground early in the third. PJ Fletcher scored his first of two goals in the period with a slap from the left circle that beat Langford clean. Fletcher tallied again in front on a mad scramble to trim the deficit to just one.
-Dubuque pulled Parik late in the third and had a few good chances but eventually Des Moines found a clean look at the empty net and buried the closing goal.
-The Saints five-game win streak was snapped with the loss, but the team has still won eight of their last 11 games. Dubuque will be in a good position to gain some separation in the standings when they host Youngstown three times this upcoming weekend. The games will be Thursday, Friday and Saturday in Dubuque.
