Dubuque Can't Complete Comeback, Fall 4-2 to Tri-City
March 23, 2019 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
The Fighting Saints couldn't muster enough offense on Saturday night as Tri-City was able to come out of Dubuque with a 4-2 win and the series sweep. The Storm put forth a better defensive effort with Isaiah Saville between the pipes and needed an empty-netter to seal the win late in the third. Dubuque played two of their better games during the weekend.
-Both teams combined for just 21 shots after the first two periods. To put that in perspective the two teams combined for 20 shots through the first period of last night's game. Both teams held the other in check on the offensive side and scoring chances could be counted on one hand through two periods.
-Brendan Furry broke the ice for the Storm in the second period. Furry has been a key piece for the Storm, totaling 30 points in 30 games with the Storm. Furry scored in both games this weekend and was one of the better forwards on either team.
-Riese Gaber grabbed a secondary assist on the first goal and extended his point-streak to nine games for the Fighting Saints. Gaber has 25 points this season and has been the best Saint for the last month-plus. He once again was one of the three stars and noticeable on every shift.
-The game shifted in the third period as the teams entered tied. Tri-City scored twice in four and a half minutes to take the lead. Nick Capone notched his first USHL goal of the season and Brad Morrisey grabbed a fortuitous bounce to push pass Aaron Randazzo.
-Both of Dubuque's goals were scored on sharp angle shots that beat Saville high. J.D. Greenway's ninth of the season was a gorgeous play on the rush as he beat Saville blocker side. Derek Contessa also beat Saville blocker side and went above the shoulder from almost at the goal line.
-Both teams were dominant on the penalty kill as neither power play was able to do much of anything. Tri-City came in to the weekend with the top PK in the league and Dubuque had the lowest percentage. However, both teams killed the man advantage comparably this weekend.
-Even with the loss, Dubuque's magic number to clinch a playoff spot moved to just four points. With the Central Illinois Flying Aces losing to Fargo, Dubuque is just a couple wins away from clinching their ninth straight berth in the Clark Cup playoffs.
-Aaron Randazzo lost his first game in three starts but performed well for Dubuque. The backup only saw action once from January 18th-March 15th but hasn't missed a beat since returning to a more regular role.
-Dubuque will end March with a three-game weekend as they play Cedar Rapids away on Friday. They are home against Des Moines on Saturday and against CI on Sunday.
