Greenville Drive News Release
Charleston, SC - The Drive (22-19) received a dose of their own medicine Thursday night, as the Charleston RiverDogs (27-13) used clutch pitching and thwarted a ninth-inning rally to hold on for a 2-1 victory in the series finale.
Zach McAllister (5-2) stifled the Drive offense over 7.0 scoreless innings, scattering seven hits while fanning a career-high 11 batters. The right-hander recorded at least one strikeout in each of his seven innings, with two punchouts in four frames.
While McAllister was dealing on the mound, the RiverDogs needed just single runs in the first two innings for the eventual victory. Austin Krum began the bottom of the first reaching on a throwing error by Drive pitcher Chris Province (3-1), and eventually came around to score on Jesus Montero's groundout.
An inning later, Charleston recorded one hit but were still able to push across their second run. After a leadoff walk to Braedyn Pruitt, followed by a Chris Angelini single, David Williams collected an RBI on a groundout.
The Drive collected a hit in six of their nine at bats, but were not able to push a run across until the top of the ninth inning. After reliever Jonathan Ortiz retired the first two batters of the inning, Ty Weeden singled and advanced to second on a balk. Greenville would cut their deficit in half on a Manny Arambarris single.
The chance for a comeback was ended, however, as Arambarris was thrown out trying to stretch his hit into a double.
From the third inning on, the Drive pitching continued their stellar performance as Province and reliever Bryce Cox combined to sit down 13 straight batters. After a two-out double by Brian Baisley in the third, the RiverDogs managed just one more baserunner when Williams struckout, but reached on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth.
The Drive now travel to historic Grayson Stadium in Savannah, GA for a four-game series with the Sand Gnats. Lefty Jose Alvarez will toe the rubber for Greenville in the series opener while Savannah counters with southpaw Mike Antonini.
The Drive return home to Fluor Field on Tuesday, May 20th for an 8-game home stand that begins with these same Charleston RiverDogs.
