Charleston RiverDogs News Release

Charleston starter Zach McAllister hurled seven shutout innings and struck out 11 batters to lead the RiverDogs back into first place with a 2-1 victory over the Greenville Drive in South Atlantic League action Thursday night in front of 5,579 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

Despite recording only three hits on the night, Charleston wins to salvage a split in the four-game series and improves to 27-13 overall while Greenville falls to 22-19.

Combined with Asheville's 4-3 loss at Savannah, the RiverDogs reclaim first place in the Southern Division standings, just as the Tourists head into town for an important four-game series that begins on Friday night.

McAllister (5-2) was in control all night, and although he surrendered seven hits, six of them were singles. He faced 28 batters without issuing a single walk in addition to recording 11 punchouts. The right-handed McAllister bounced back from a rough outing in Asheville last Friday in which he allowed nine runs in three innings.

Chase Vacek pitched a perfect eighth inning while closer Jonathan Ortiz picked up his 11th save by pitching the ninth.

Brain Baisley collected two of Charleston's three hits while Carmen Angelini had the other. Despite earning a series split, the RiverDogs mustered only six hits and two runs in the final 26 innings of the series.

Greenville had nine hits on the night with Ryan Kalish and Yamaico Navarro each having a pair. Charleston pitching held the Drive to only five total runs in the four-game series.

The RiverDogs pushed a run across in the first inning, their tally first since the second inning of Tuesday night's game two of the series, a string of 19 frames. Austin Krum led off and reached on a throwing error by the Drive's starting pitcher Chris Province (3-1), as Province lobbed an easy throw over the first baseman's head.

Krum advanced to second on a wild pitch and then tagged and moved to third when Justin Snyder flied out to center. Krum finally crossed the plate on Jesus Montero's groundout to first base for the quick 1-0 lead.

Charleston added a second run in the second inning, as Braedyn Pruitt opened with a walk against Province and advanced to second on Angelini's single to right.

Chase Odenreider then reached on a fielder's choice, pushing Pruitt to third, and Pruitt scored the RiverDogs' second and final run of the night on Dave Williams' RBI groundout to third base.

After being shutout for 8.2 innings, Greenville rallied with two out in the ninth against Ortiz to post its lone run of the game. Ty Weeden singled to left on an 0-2 pitch and then moved to second when Ortiz balked.

The next batter Manny Arambarris singled up the middle to score Weeden, but on the play the centerfielder Krum threw towards home plate and Ortiz cut it off. Ortiz noticed that Arambarris had rounded too far between first and second base, and alertly tagged the Drive runner as he attempted to retreat to first base, thus ending the game in a rare 8-1 putout.

Province went six complete frames and allowed two runs on three hits while striking out four and walking one. Reliever Bryce Cox was impressive in his two innings of work as he faced only seven batters and struck out four of them.

The game lasted only two hours and nine minutes, just three minutes longer than Wednesday night's quickest game of the season.

Game one of the crucial Asheville series begins Friday at 7:05 p.m. RiverDogs manager Torre Tyson has announced that right-hander Dellin Betances (4-2, 3.73 ERA) will toe the rubber while Asheville is expected to counter with righty Jhoulys Chacin (5-1, 1.87 ERA). The game can be heard in the Lowcountry on ESPN Radio 910 AM, The Team.
