Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - With one swing of the bat, the Greenville Drive were able to start their weekend series against the Charleston RiverDogs on the right foot. A Tucker Tubbs solo homer leading off the bottom of the eighth gave the Drive a 3-2 win in Thursday's contest at Fluor Field.
Tubbs wasted no time untying things, as he drove a Nick Green (3-4) offering 415 feet just to the left of the batter's eye in center field to put the Drive (33-20) on top.
The homer was the icing on the cake of a Drive comeback from an early 2-0 deficit. In the fourth, Lorenzo Cedrola reached on an infield single and later came in to score after a hit from Ryan Scott and a Charleston (26-27) error. Tyler Hill then followed with a chopper over a draw-in RiverDogs infield to tie the game.
The RiverDogs scored a pair of runs in the top of the first thanks to a pair of hits by Estevan Florial and Angel Aguilar, as well as a pair of Drive errors.
After the first inning, Robby Sexton settled in to deliver a quality start for the Drive. He worked six innings and allowed just those two runs on four hits and one walk while tying his season high with seven strikeouts.
Hildemaro Requena earned the win for the Drive with three scoreless frames of relief. Green took the loss for Charleston despite allowing just two earned runs in seven and one-third innings.
Hill collected two hits for Greenville, while Aguilar and Blake Rutherford did the same for Charleston.
The Battle of the Palmetto State presented by Spinx continues on Friday night as the teams meet again at Fluor Field at 7:05. Left-hander Jhonathan Diaz (1-0, 3.60) takes the ball for the Drive, while the RiverDogs will send right-hander Freicer Perez (1-2, 4.28) to the mound.
