Greenville Drive News Release
Savannah, GA - For the first half of Tuesday's game, the Drive (6-7) and Sand Gnats were deadlocked in a pitcher's duel. However, in the top of the fifth Savannah's (3-9) defense became non existent as they totaled six errors over the final four innings to propel the Drive to a 12-5 victory.
Starting pitchers Dustin Richardson and Tobi Stoner were on cruise control for their respective teams. Richardson allowed just one run on five hits and two walks while striking out seven in five innings for the Drive to pickup his first win of the season.
On the other side, Stoner (0-2) was just as effective, allowing just two Greenville hits through the first four innings. However, in the top of the fifth, everything changed as his defense could not back him up with key plays.
Trailing 1-0, Greenville plated six runs on five hits and three Savannah miscues. With three runs already in, Manny Arambarris added to the onslaught with a two-out, two RBI-double. Former Wren High School standout Jason Place then followed with an RBI-single of his own.
After adding a single run in the seventh, the Drive took advantage of two more Gnats errors for five runs. Carlos Fernandez and Pedro Vasquez chipped in with RBI-singles before Lars Anderson collected two RBI with his first triple of the year.
The Sand Gnats attempted to chip away at the Drive lead with runs in the final three innings, but they had dug themselves a hole too deep to get out of.
Greenville and Savannah continue their four-game series Wednesday night at historic Grayson Stadium with first pitch set for 7:05 PM. Right-hander Brian Steinocher will take the hill for the Drive, as the Sand Gnats counter with fellow righty Tim Stronach.
The Drive return home to West End Field on Saturday, April 21st when the host the Asheville Tourists for four games. Tickets for all Drive home games can be purchased by visiting www.GreenvilleDrive.com or by calling (864) 240-4500.
NOTES: Carlos Fernandez led the Drive offense with three hits...Jon Still and Kristopher Negron each chipped in with two hits apiece...Lars Anderson led all players with three RBI...Only four of the Drive's 12 runs will earned
