Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Sand Gnats committed eight errors in their 12-5 loss to the Greenville Drive Tuesday night at Grayson Stadium. Gnats starter Tobi Stoner (0-2) took the loss despite not allowing an earned run in 4.1 innings of work. Dustin Richardson (1-2) notched his first win of the year for the Drive.
Greenville was trailing 1-0 entering the 5th inning but would have the lead for good by the end of the inning. Stoner rolled through the first four innings, allowing two just hits, but three Sand Gnats errors in the 5th led to six unearned runs and the removal of Stoner. Reliever Jonathan Castillo came in to try to stop the bleeding but was unable to do so.
Greenville added one in the 7th and five more in the 9th. For the game, the Gnats allowed 12 Greenville runs with only two of them earned.
Offensively, Savannah had plenty of bright spots. Shortstop Juan Lagares finished the night 2-for-3 with an RBI triple. Second baseman Hector Pellot went 1-for-3, stole a base and hit first home run of the season. Leivi Ventura also drove in two runs with an 8th inning triple that cut the score to 7-4. However, the Drive's five-run 9th put the game out of reach.
The Gnats and Drive play game two of this four-game series tomorrow beginning at 7:05 p.m. Right hander Tim Stronach (0-2, 9.45 ERA) will take the hill for the Gnats while Brian Steinocher (1-1, 6.00 ERA) will throw for the Drive.
