Greenville Drive News Release
Just one night after pounding out 17 hits, the Greenville Drive (14-34) bats went silent on Saturday night, as they mustered just five hits in a 6-0 loss to the Charleston RiverDogs (28-18).
Charleston scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth against Drive reliever Yunior Ortega to pull away. A Drive fielding error allowed the first run to score, and back-to-back singles by Jake Cave and Claudio Custodio extended the lead to 4-0. Ortega then walked in a run and allowed an RBI single to Peter O'Brien before being removed.
Cesar Vargas (2-2) got the win for the RiverDogs, as he hurled five shutout frames, allowing just two hits and three walks while striking out six. Phil Wetherell and Alex Smith added a pair of scoreless innings each to preserve the shutout.
Charleston took a 1-0 lead in the fourth against Brian Johnson (1-4). A leadoff error and a hit by pitch and a walk with one out loaded the bases for Kelvin De Leon, who grounded out to score a run.
The unearned run was the only blemish against Johnson, who pitched well despite the loss. He worked five innings and gave up two hits while walking two and punching out six.
Cave, O'Brien and Fu-Lin Kuo all collected two hits for Charleston. Greenville's Mookie Betts extended his hitting streak to 19 games with an eighth-inning single.
The teams will wrap up the four-game series on Sunday in Charleston, with first pitch scheduled for 5:05 PM. The Drive will try to split the series as they send RHP Francellis Montas (1-4, 5.08) to the hill, while the RiverDogs counter with RHP Rafael De Paula (5-2, 2.38).
