
Dramatic Ninth Puts Gnats Past GreenJackets

Savannah, GA - SS Phillip Evans sent the Augusta GreenJackets packing with an electrifying game-winning gap hit to left field in the bottom of the ninth inning. The Gnats defeated the GreenJackets 2-1 in front of 3,196 fans at Historic Grayson Stadium on Saturday night. There were fireworks on and off the field Saturday night beginning with four scoreless innings from Savannah RHP Jake Kuebler in his first start on the season. The GreenJackets managed to score a run in the sixth inning off of reliever RHP Marcos Camarena in his first appearance of the season with the Gnats. Camarena finished with four innings pitched allowing four hits, while striking out three.
Augusta RHP Martin Agosta fended off Gnats hitters for an impressive seven innings of scoreless ball, allowing just four hits, while giving up only two free passes and striking out eight. RHP Derek Law did his part as the setup man, pitching a perfect eighth inning in relief for the GreenJackets. RHP Tyler Mizenko took the mound in the ninth attempting to add to his perfect 12 saves in 12 opportunities.
The bottom of the ninth inning saw a one-out full-count walk from LF Greg Pron. Next, a hard-hit single from 1B Cole Frenzel gave way to a C Jeff Glenn single, scoring LF Greg Pron from second base. PH Jayce Boyd came off the bench to continue the rally, but promptly flied out to left field.
With the Gnats down to their final out with runners on first and second bases, the California native SS Philip Evans squared up a hanging breaking ball deep into the left field gap to score 1B Cole Frenzel, winning tonight's contest 2-1.
The Gnats (28-19) improved to 8-2 against the GreenJackets (26-22) again securing their second place slot, just a half game behind Charleston in the South Atlantic League Southern Division.
With the ninth inning Sang Gnats heroics, Savannah RHP Tyler Vanderheiden earned his third win of the season, while RHP Tyler Mizenko took his first loss and blown save for the GreenJackets.
The Gnats will send RHP Luis Cessa (2-2, 4.81) to the mound Sunday against Augusta RHP Justin Schumer (1-4, 10.38). First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 pm. Gates to Historic Grayson Stadium open at 1 pm. That radio pregame show on News/Talk 630 WBMQ and online at sandgnats.com begins at 12:45 pm.
