Greenville Drive News Release
Salisbury, MD - On the first day of a Northern Division road trip, the Greenville Drive offense was stuck in neutral for much of Tuesday, as the Delmarva Shorebirds used strong pitching to defeat the Drive 3-1 in the first of a three-game series.
The Drive (10-9) collected just four hits on the night, but they had a chance for a big rally in the ninth inning as they loaded the bases with nobody out. Shorebirds (11-8) reliever Robert Strader bore down, however, and got a fly out and a double play to end the game and collect his second save.
Kyri Washington drove home the lone run of the night for Greenville when he smacked a double to left field in the second to score Josh Ockimey, who led off the frame with a walk. Washington had two of Greenville's four hits on the night.
The Shorebirds took over from there, scoring single runs in the second, third and fourth innings to take the lead. Ryan Mountcastle hit a one-out triple off Roniel Raudes (2-1) in the second and came home on a sacrifice fly by Natanael Delgado to tie the game.
Another sacrifice fly in the third, this one by Alex Murphy, put Delmarva ahead 2-1, and a two-out triple by Drew Turbin in the fourth plated Ademar Rifaela, who singled.
Shorebirds starter Francisco Jimenez (2-1) kept the Drive off balance all game long, as he allowed only three hits and one run over seven innings while striking out six.
A bright spot for the Drive in defeat was the relief work of Victor Diaz, who held the Shorebirds scoreless for three and one-third innings and struck out a pair.
The teams will meet again on Wednesday night at 7:05. The Drive will send RH Daniel Gonzalez (1-0, 6.00) to the mound, and the Shorebirds will counter with RH Cristian Alvarado (1-2, 5.02).
